Help! Festool router bits for domino-size mortising?

Can't see why not. Use spiral upcuts for best results.

Thank you Rob.

I'm surprised there are no other replies, I would have thought more people would have done this, but I gues everybody but me got a Domino ;D

Today I orderdered some sipo tenons and two Festool router bits :

490960 -and- 490945

I'm going to try to make Domino-sized router cut motises on my new mortising jig (in the FOG jigs section)

I'll post the results with pics.

I'm dreaming of getting a Domino at the end of this year, although this method may have to do for a while...

With no intention of ever buying a Domino machine, I ordered an assortment of all the sizes of Domino stock. I intend to cut the mortises using my router. CMT of Italy sells metric sized bits in 5  & 6 mm made of carbide. I already owned an 8mm and 10mm bits in HSS.

So far, the fit has been fine, even though I had my 8mm sharpened once. What Rob said about preferring a spiral bit might be important for at least the two larger sizes because of chip removal. My 8 & 10 mm bits are both straight flutes, and so long as I make small, incremental plunges, chips or overheating haven't been much of a problem. You do want to use caution routing the trench side to side. Heat buildup in the slot can be considerable with the full length of the bit in the wood. A spiral avoids this issues. With the smaller two sizes I don't think a straight bit is much of a problem. Not much chip clearing to be done.

I can look up the metric numbers for you, since few of the CMT catalogues, nor their website, even mentions the topic of metric bits.

I will try something called Mortise Pal when my life comes back to normal after hurricane Ike. This is available in USA. I don't where are you located so I don't know if they ship oversees.  This is a cheaper way to use the dominos without the machine, If you don't want to buy the Mortise pal, they have the router bits to fit the dominos.
