I am installing a vise for the first time.  I was expecting the back of the rear jaw and the horizontal part of the bracket to be square (90 degrees), but the back and the plate surface are at an angle slightly larger than that (see pic).

So . . . which surface should be flush to the bench top?  Or am I approaching the whole thing wrong? Many thanks in advance.

Not a problem.

If you want to get fancy with the mounting adjust/shim so that the business side of the jaw is 90 degrees to the bench top. Not really necessary but sometimes handy.

The vise/vice should be installed with the "rear" jaw protector flush with the front face of your workbench.  Meaning the vice itself should be inset to the workbench, with the rear jaw plate either integrated as part of the workbench front face (i.e. morticed in) or a "disposable" jaw protector inset flush with the front cheek or face of the workbench.

The lack of parallel (taper) between jaws is both normal & appropriate to quality vise manufacture. This allows the cramped-up vice jaws to become parallel, & an adequate, secure parallel workpiece grip as the screw is tightened.

Thanks for posting that PDF from Highland WW.  I have an old Record quick release vise to install and that was good to read before I start drilling and cutting.

[member=6193]Rob Z[/member]  here are 2 other tutorials on installing a Record style wood vise.

The Woodcraft guide is for a flush mount.https://www.woodcraft.com/blog_entries/installing-a-bench-vise

While the Hackney Tools guide provides 3 other methods.http://hackneytools.com/2015/02/how-to-fit-a-record-vice/

Cheese,

Thanks for those links!  I bought an old workbench off of CL just to get the vise  [big grin] , and once I got to the house of the former owner, I learned the bench was built from white oak.  Double bonus! [big grin] I salvaged all the WO for another project and soon need to install this old Record vise.  BTW, if anyone is interested, Paul Sellars has some good info on the old Record vises.

Speaking of vises on a workbench, check out this bench at about  14:30  [eek] [eek] [eek]
