For my smallest sanders (Metabo SXE 400 Random & Bosch Delta) I use a small 19mm hose which is a more convenient push fit onto the tools and on the other end into the end of a 36mm Festo/ol hose. It's also conveniently the right size & flexibility for clearing the flueways of my woodstove, whereas a 27mm hose is just too fat.
At high suction levels, the setup screams like a gas turbine jet engine such as fitted to a helicopter or small private jet or turboprop aircraft. It too is somewhat beyond the threshold of pain. My solution is to back off the suction until the noise disappears, which fortunately corresponds to an appropriate level of suction for the 6mm holes on the baby sanders' heads.
I too recommend the broomstick approach for clearing blockages, as a wooden dowel is quite easily manipulated, even when fully immersed in the hose, to remove recalcitrant blockages. I also recommend the exercise of caution here, as I've inadvertently punctured a couple of hoses with lodged nails and injudicious use of the dowel rod.
