How fast is your network connection?

Stu Ablett posted a message on another forum about how to test your Internet speed:http://www.speedtest.net/.  To test yours, just go the site and click a test site.  The recommended site is the pyramid in gold.  The speed test will run and then display your network speed.

Unlike other internet speed testers, it's easy to post the results here in graphical format.  To post yours here, click on the "COPY" button next to the label "Direct Link (to send in messages)" when the test is finished (usually a few seconds).  Then paste it in a message (Ctrl-V), select the URL, and click the "Insert Image" button (second row, second button from the left).  The tag will look like this:

Code:

Here's my results:

I'm happy with my Internet access, but I had no idea it was THAT fast!

Dan.

Results are too depressing to post -- did you make up your numbers, or can I move to your house?

Dan, do you think Microsoft just down the street has anything to do with the blazing speeds?

If it's any consolation, I used a 3Kb, 28Kb and 56Kb modems for years.    Then I "upgraded" to ISDN from Verizon - $110/month for 144Kb/sec and it was down at least 20% of the time.

I'm not the biggest fan of Comcast, but my cost dropped by more than 50% and service has been pretty much 100% of the time.  When Comcast first installed it, the cable speed was about 1,000 Kb/sec.  Then about four months 4-6 months ago, the bumped it to about 7,000 Kb/sec.  I've been a happy puppy since I converted to Comcast.

The local telephone company - Verizon - came out about 3 months ago ago and FINALLY installed DSL in our neighborhood.  These cheeseboros showed up one day, dug up my front lawn, and plopped an ugly green access box right in middle.  Of course, it's within the public access limit so I can't do anything about it.  But they didn't even offer the courtesy of notifying me!  >:(  They've been spamming me with promo e-mails and calls ever since.  I take great joy in telling the telemarketers what I think of their service and ripping up their spam mail!    8)

OK, who else wants to play "What's my line (speed)"?!?  ;D

Road Runner offers a spped doupler for an additional $15.00 a month. IMO my connection is good as it is.

Not bad for up in the woods.  When DSL arrived, our property values went up.  :D

My wife uses a VPN to her office.  I can use the DSL at the same time, radio, You Tube, uploading, downloading, doesn't affect her.  The only thing I can't do when she's at work is turn on BitTorrent.  Boy, does that soak up  bandwidth.

Anyone using satellite broadband?

BTW, the speed test wouldn't complete using Firefox.  Had to put on the rubber gloves and use Internet Explorer for the test.  Excuse me, I have to go decontaminate...

I've had broadband since 1998. Since then, it's just been getting faster and faster.

Wow Dan!
I have Verizon FIOS so I expected my download speed to be higher than this. The upload is pretty good but goes pretty much unused.

What is latency in this context? I just noticed mine is very high, 3 times higher than the next highest so far.

Sounds like something you should be medicated for -- how about the purchase of a new tool for therapeutic value only?

Here's mine - rather depressing after see the others.

But then, I'm 2 miles down a dirt road and 20 miles from the nearest small (very small) city. My connection is Fixed Wireless.  Tower is on mountain about 10+ miles from here. I tried satellite but it was FAR,FAR worse.

Tom, thanks for sharing your pain...  it sure made me feel better about the score my connection received.  But not much better.  At least I'm in good company.    :D

What's more depressing than the speed is the fact that I pay $55/month for this.

I am kinda in rural America though.

Well, after seeing Tom's speed I felt a little better (enough to post I guess).  (Not to mention Bill-E's, which just posted while I was trying to figure out the inline image thing).

::)

I feel like I'm in the slow crowd. :'(  Atleast it is better than dial-up. :)

I am really in the slwo lane although it feels fast enough.  Guess I need to call my dsl guy and tell him to turn up the band width at the switch.
