Looking at most profiles you see a list of every tool that someone owns, why?. Is this like a "I love me wall" in the military?

Proud owners.

And it gives people insight in what experience others have with what tools. After all, this is a forum about tools. People ask questions, and people share what they know.

I guess I'm of two minds about it.  There's an aspect of it that is definitely braggadocious.  Like, look at all the tools I have.  So I've debated with myself whether to just erase my own signature.

But there are some positives; one personal, one communal.  The communal: the FOG is generally good about this, but sometimes in life people like to comment on stuff and give advice just for the sake of doing it.  Obviously if you stick around the FOG or any other forum for a bit you develop a sense of how to weight the advice you're getting.  But one thing the tool list does is let you know whether the person commenting actually knows and uses the tool.  The personal: When I started converting my shop over to Festool almost two years ago, adding an additional tool to the tool list signature was a small but significant reaffirmation of the choice I had made to invest in the Green.  Now maybe this betrays a delicate self-image that I attach any significance to a profile signature, rather than placing it all on the jobs I perform or the new skills I acquire.  I dunno.  All I can say is that it feels good to expand the list.

I agree with Alex and Edward Reno. When I ask for advice say on a purchase, or how best to use a tool, I like to know the people giving the advice actually have the tool and have used it. This does not mean I would not heed the advice of a poster who does not list their Festools. There are posters who do not for their own reasons, it's an individual choice. It does feel good to expand the list.

[member=48533]redtailvt[/member] BTW, what is an "I love me wall"?

Although I generally agree with what's been said, having a list of tools may or may not be an indication of experience with those tools.  I have some Festools that I would never comment on or offer advice about simply because I haven't used them that much and I don't feel I have enough experience.

I do have to say that I've never before even thought about the lists of tools and what they meant or implied.  I generally pay more attention to what is being said in the post and I usually do not notice what's in the signature.  I guess now I'll be looking at things differently. LOL

I agree there's a braggadocious side, and thanks for teaching me a new odd word Edward [smile]. In that regard it sure is a bit like the "I love me wall" the OP talks about. Had to look that one up too, by the way. Link. You learn something new every day.

When I started to participate on this forum I had not a single Festool but found the FOG because I was doing online research about the Rotex 150 because I needed a new sander. I saw all these people here with signatures that listed up to 27 tools, and I thought that was quite impressive. So when I got my first Rotex I started to fill up my signature too.

I also have several collections of another nature, but one thing you always do is keep a catalogue. I occured to me that listing my acquisitions here on the FOG served as the catalogue of my personal Festool collection. I didn't do it to brag, just listing the 2 or 3 Festool's I had in the beginning in no way compared to the 20+ lists of others so there was little to brag about. But it sure did motivate me to try and make the list longer.

But then when I got at 11 or 12, I started to feel like I was bragging indeed. I didn't like that feeling, so from that moment on I removed my signature. I do not think I'll use a signature ever again. I also don't like the clogging up of screen space with all these, ultimately, pointless signatures. I'm glad you can turn all people's signatures off in your profile settings so you never see any at all.

It's a personal thing, for me I find it's just unnecessary clutter and am glad that signatures can be turned off.

To each their own in my mind.  I had mine listed but I post under my real name and decided that I really didn't want to advertise.  Of course I could have deleted my location but I wanted that in case someone was close and needed help.

My tools are tools not trophies.  But every day that I get a chance to use them I remember why I bought them.
