For those of you who own an iPhone or and iPad, the iHandy Carpenter is an app that you may find useful.  It has a plumb, a level, a protractor, a ruler in imperial/metric, and a three dimensional level for truing up boards, floors, etc.  The app cost $1.99

Also, there's a free app that turns your device into a flashlight...iHandy Flashlight

Or, you can download free Spirit Level Tools...bubble level, inclinometer, protractor, ruler

Suddenly, $175.00 for a SysLight doesn't seem that bad! (App = Free....Unlocked iPhone to run it = $799.00)  [jawdrop]

And after IOS7 finally there is a flash light on/off button in the action centre (swipe up from bottom of screen) that makes all these flash light apps redundant.

And there are a bazillion level apps for free available and also these toolbox type apps like the Bosch app.

Yes, even iHandy offers the level app for free.  I downloaded the Bosch Toolbox.  It appears to be more of a promotional app than a real useful app.  The 3 dimensional level alone makes the iHandy worth paying the two bucks for...for me.  No more winding sticks.
But if you or anyone finds a cool and useful app, please let me know. Thanks.

Just use the level in iOS 7, bring up the compass, swipe left, bubble level flat, flip on edge, vial level without the vial.

It also works as a protractor when on edge in 1º increments.

For fine work we need 1/10th degree accuracy (or better). How reliable are these little gadgets anyway? Do any of the apps allow a "zero re-set" like the cheap stand alone digital inclinometers?

Yes, the iHandy has a zero reset...but, so does the spirit level inclinometer...in fact, I just discovered that they also have a free ruler, protractor, bubble level, and basic level. The iHandy zeros out a little clearer.

The compass app in iOS 7 also has a zero reset when using the level. Still only 1 degree increments though.
