IKEA system32 27mm offset holes

Can someone enlighten my why would IKEA switch to 27mm offset for their system 32 holes.

I can't find any BLUM catalog items or any other system32 that is using 27, or anything else other than 37mm for that matter

It can't be due to reusing their hardware, I can just drill everything at 27 instead. Do they think it's stronger? Would it not be worse? The front pivot is closer to the front now and may be easier to top over pushing down on a drawer or cabinet door
Also front holes are closer to you and easier to see, and the back holes are further from the front if you need to adjust the little shelf hangers

Because, IKEA.

They want the average consumer to buy ALL their cabinet stuff from them, not bare cabinets from IKEA, tricked out then with higher quality fittings and hardware. 

Sod IKEA.  Most of what they supply is thinly tarted tat, bound for the landfill sooner rather than later.  Even some of the lines that were previously passable have been cost engineered to crap-dom at this stage.

Yep, IKEA is all about restricting use to their own stuff only.

Even worse, you can't even combine things from their own different lines. I recently made a TV cabinet out of a few basic Besta units, did some cutting and recombining to make something that fits my needs best. I had some left over hinges from a broken Pax cabinet and thought I could use them in the Besta. To my surprise the row of holes had a minute offset, very small, but just enough to make sure the Pax hinges would not work because the doors would not close due the resulting stress.

There is no sane reason to do this, except for wanting to limit your customers on purpose.

Is that on their kitchen cabinets? I have built my cabinet boxes last year up to their specifications. Their doors worked perfectly, so did the hinges. They are using the standard blum spacings.

it was an old bookcase.

If they are actively designing their items not to be compatible with each other, that's pretty disappointing then. I thought IKEA is all about environmental sustainability.
Wonder what their stance is on ikeahacks or any of the cabinet shops that use IKEA boxes and only add custom made fronts, etc

Different groups design the different products in the company.  It would be nice if IKEA used the same box design for everything, Kitchen, Closets, Bath, Shelves, they don't.  If they wanted to do that, it would be breaking some of those existing systems.

The kitchen stuff is fully "standard" with 32mm hardware and layouts. Everything else is much less important.  If you had a walk in closet built in PAX and one day went there to buy a few more shelves and they no longer fit, you would not be happy. Just like when they redid the kitchen system several years ago and "broke" everything. People could no longer update their old kitchens with the latest doors, etc.

IKEA stuff uses 32mm layout in parts of the design that they could have done anything with. It works out great as you can use a DD40/LR32 and drill holes in the parts and make new stuff. A lot of their stuff uses standard spaced dowels in the construction, just 6mm or 8mm.  They could have done anything, but since it's 32mm it work great for those who modify.

The kitchen stuff is NOT standard.  I have about 14 Sektion base cabs I can show you to prove it

The GRID itself is still 32mm, so standard hardware fits- but the front offset isn't 37mm, so all the hardware ends up in the wrong place. 

I did A LOT of LR32'ing that day....
