hi there.
i am looking for a bit holder for my impact driver.
i have been using a wera kompactor bit holder (i dont think it was designed for impact ). it is broken inside and is hard to swap bits. it also started breaking bits  really quick.
so i bought a wera impactor version.
it works great except that the bit isnt magnetised . there is a sleeve that you slide up behind the screw that is magnitised but that is a pain  because it doesnt always stay out . i am always droping screws even with the sleeve out.
its a bad design. it works great sometimes but fails miserably 80% of the time.
hence im looking again

my options are
wera kompacter(not impact but lasted me a good while)
bosch impact bit holder(looks like a copy or same scource as wera impacter)
dewalt impact it looks very wide and aqward to use from the pics iv seen
milwakee shock wave. normal looking design (front runner at the moment but shipping from supplier is 20 gbp on a 8 gbp item)

what do you use on your impact drivers
any options iv missed

thanks alan

I use the Milwaukee impact bit holder its still going strong

But the milwueakee impact bits are rubbish  they look fancy black with a narrow shaft but I snap them in no time I got two packs free when I bought some tools  glad I got them free.

I can't comment on a good holder but I see everyone has an 'impact' version of the bits these days. Has anyone developed brand preferences or is this another marketing ploy?

i like the look of that milwaukee one. its nice and narrow . other ones are very wide and aqward to use sometimes.

greg . most companies are bringing out their version  but i think most are all made by the same company .

Alan , i have got the impaktor holder as well and i have to agree its a pita , i was thinking of magnetising the whole thing to see if that was a better solution. I think wiha do a slim impact bit holder , maybe  worth a look

I've not seen a good adaptor for impact driver use, Witte do very good impact bits. At 32mm long they give slightly, the best ones that used to be available were the Magna Iso-Temp but they were replaced with Chinese ones that snap as soon as you look at them. Another solution is to use longer bits, 89mm or 125mm give a bit.

i dont see anything there thats impact ready.
loads of normal ones that say not for impact.

i dont see anything on the witte site either.

Go to Rowland tools website, look for their price list, page 49, I think.

A timely thread for me as also looking at impact drivers + impact bit-holders + impact bits.

Alan m:  Don't know if I'm missing something.
For eg, I googled  "Milwaukee shockwave impact bit holder" and can be bought for less than the price you mentioned (20 gbp on a 8 gbp item)
I've just come off the phone to Anglia Tool Centre, and they said would ship to Ireland for (I think - already forgotten - lol)  about £5.

(Edit:  Just to clarify if needed - the description given in website is:
"Shockwave impact Duty Magnetic Bit Holder for use with Impact Drivers. ")

Haven't checked anywhere else yet.
Hope this helps - a bit.

Thanks to JMB as well - I believe everything he says.  Well mostly  [big grin]

Richard

I think Alan was searching for an impact bit holder.
Besides the Wera Impaktor there are a few other out there:
1. Festool Centrotec Impact BH 60 CE-Imp. 498974 with special Impact bits Twinbox 498829
2. Bosch Impact Control Anti shock 2 608 522 060
3. Wiha Bittbudy with Maxxtor bits and bit holder

i dont think the festool one would work in a normal impact driver.
the bosch look like the wera impactor . i dont like that the bit isnt magnetic.

wow thanks fuzzy.
i hadnt checked their site.

Why does not the Festool would work in a impact?

On their website Wera says that the Impaktor also has a ringmagnet?
Look at: Wera
The Bosch may look like the Wera but is also magnetic!
Look at: Bosch

Alan m:  Your welcome.  Hope it works out - I'm just aware that what people say on phone doesn't always match up when you actually order.

Neeleman:
1/   I was initially going by the list Alan posted originally.  My understanding is that the Milwaukee referred to is an 'impact' bit-holder.
I have edited my post to try to clarify that.  This web-page also reinforces that:

http://www.milwaukeetool.co.uk/tools/accessories/screwdriving/screwdriving-bits-sockets/magnetic-bit-holders/shockwave-mag-holders/shockwave-magnetic-bit-holder-60mm--1pc/4932352406/

2/   wrt the "Wiha MaxxTor BitBuddy" - I'm with Alan on this one.  On page 198 of the 2013 Axminster catalogue, the description doesn't say anything about the bit-holder at all; just goes on about how good the bits are.  Maybe they think the bits so good, that they don't need a special 'impact' bit-holder.

3/   Didn't know about the Festool Centrotec Impact BH 60 CE-Imp. 498974.
Whilst the Twinbox 498829 bit set (also on page 198 of Axminster catalogue) available, cannot quickly see any reference to the Centrotec impact bit-holder.  Also from what I can see, there's no reference to them on the Festool UK website - never mind the Festool 2012/2013 catalogue.
Unless you use a Festool TI 15 drill/impact driver, can't really see the point of considering it; though it would be great to get some feedback on the performance of the Festool 'impact' bits.
FWIW - one place UK buyer can get the impact Centrotec is:

http://www.powertool-supplies.co.uk/festool-magnetic-bit-holder-bh-60-ce-imp.html

Richard.

I'm using the Centrotec Impact BH 60 CE-Imp. bit holder together with the Impact TwinBox after I ruined some of the 100mm long Centrotec bits in my TI 15 Impact screwdriver.
I still think it's a pity that Festool also doesn't come out with the long Impact bits.
Even Protool doesn't have them while they have Impact drivers much longer. They do not list any impact bits or bit holders.

i havent tried it but i dont think the festool will work in the normal hex end of the impact.

the wera does have a ring magnet but it is a waste of time. thats the one i have. everytime you drive a screw you have to pull out the sleeve with one hand then hold it with the other , then put on the screw ,then readjust your grip on the drill  adn start driving the screw.
if you knock the screw even a small bit then the screw falls to the ground and the whole process starts again. normaly magnatised bits dont fall they just flop over  so all you have to do is straighten it up. it easily takes 4-5 times longer to drive screws  one handed (in aqward places) than with a normal type bit holder.

i was driving a few slab screws this morning and used a non impact bit because of the normal magnet (and low forces involved). it was a total pleasure compared to the wera one.
if i was to give the wera a mark out of 10 i would give it 1-2 because of this fatal flaw to a normally good tool

that bosch website doesnt say what type of magnet arrangment is in there. but a different site said it was a ring magnet like the wera. if it was magnitesed normally as well than it would be great

thanks for the research neeleman

jmb can you conferm that the bit is magnetic on the milwaukee and not a ring around the bit

Alan m:
I've really got the 'bit' between my teeth on this one - lol - hope they don't get any worse  ;D

I just spoken to Milwaukee, and the man said the magnet is fixed at the bottom of the shaft - like normal. and, that it's powerful.  He even put me hold while he went and got one; then...had me listen to him 'clicking' a screw into the bit-holder - yep, the best over the phone demo I've ever had!
To be fair, it did sound satisfyingly workman like.  A good salesman - seems almost churlish not to have ordered there and then.
JMB didn't mentioned any problems, so will be interesting to see what he thinks about it.

Neeleman:
Apologies for getting your 'name' wrong in previous post - will correct it shortly.
Spoke to Festool UK earlier, and they told me the TI15 comes with the 'impact' bit-holder; makes sense of course.  Did yours come with that?  It's just that the description on their website didn't make that clear - didn't think to ask if the PZ2 bit supplied was also an 'impact' one - I guess it would be.
So...get the TI15 and get the impact Centrotec bit-holder for nothing - mmm.
How are you getting on with the drill/driver generally, if you don't mind me asking.

Your comment about ProTools interesting - I wonder how there bits/holders stand up to impact use?  Or, are people just expected to go out and get them elsewhere?

Richard.
