Not to be dense, but for some reason I can’t get any bit to stay in the driver. when I pull back the bit just comes out. All sizes. I pull the grommet forward to try got get it seated, but no luck. What am I doing wrong. Thanks.

Hi,

  Welcome to the forum  [smile]

The TiD18 accepts regular ball detent bits. What type of bit are you using?  Picture?

Seth

So specifically, I got the Festool Systainer that had a driver included and am primarily using that driver, but have tried others. For some reason they don't seem go positively engage. They drive just fine, but when I pull back on the tool the bit comes right out. Not convinced I am doing it right.

Perhaps you are using a centrotec bit holder instead of the “regular” bit holder?

I just want to make sure we are on the same page .........................

You are talking about the bit or bit holder not seating into the chuck? As opposed to a bit not staying seated into a bit holder? Right?

Does the Festool bit stay in the chuck?

Exactly what type of bits ( ball detent, wire detent, Centrotec) are not holding in the chuck?

The collar on the chuck moves forward (away from the tool body) to release. Move the collar all the way forward, hold, insert ball detent bit, release collar.

Also-- if you just push the ball detent bit hard into the chuck it will snap into place without even needing to move the collar.

Seth

I'm assuming the Festool Systainer you mention is one of thier 'installer sets'? If so, sounds like you're trying to use a Centrotec bit - these only fit the Centrotec chucks, found on all(?) the other Festool drills, but not the impact driver. You need a stock standard/universal bit, available anywhere from multiple brands.

Stopped by Wood Werks today and essentially you are correct. I got a standard bit holder and it works fine- ie stays in place. Just seems an odd choice by Festool. Read over the directions and it is not clear that this is the case. I grabbed the correct bit holder and it stays put on the driver. I felt really dumb for such a simple error, however it is fixed. Is this the case with all of their impact drivers? Seems an odd design choice.

It seems odd that the Centrotec holder came with the TiD18. Unless it was the set that also has the drill.

Not dumb. If you are not familliar with Centrotec and the holder was included with the impact, well of course you would think that it should work.

Festool makes a bit attachment that will lock the bit in the impact

In true Festool fashion it’s sold separately of course
https://www.amazon.com/Festool-Cent...tic/dp/B07VHK91SR/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Festool+bit+holder&qid=1639495402&sr=8-1

Just to be clear so that people don't order that holder to use with the impact driver ......... that linked holder is Centrotec. The problem wasn't the bit staying in the holder, it was the holder staying in the chuck because it was a Centrotec holder.

On the other hand the linked Centrotec holder is a really nice  / good holder. Made by Wera.

It is available from Wera ( Rapidapter )with regular ball detent in several lengths. Those will fit the TiD18 Impact Driver ( though not impact rated). And Wera also makes an impact rated Rapidapter line.

Seth

Now I get. It. Love the Wera stuff, but ended up ordering the Bosch impact rated driver, which will fit and is 6 bucks. At some point will pick up the Wera should this one ever misbehave or more likely get lost. Feel better now. Next thread will be about finding a way to attach an Incra LS 17 to a crown stop  attachment that I have hooked to the back of my CMS router table. Want to find a way to rig it to the fence without drilling anything Festool. Using a T track (which I would be willing to drill) may work, but again, that is another thread. Thanks so much for the insight and help.

I don't think it came with it, sounds like Ebcohn took it from one of the 'Installation Sets'. I bought a TID18 this week and it definitely didn't come with a bit holder.

To add to-tre confusion, well not too much:
Festool do make a bit holder that is all too similar to look at at first glance.https://www.festool.com/accessory/204383---bt-imp-sort3#Overview

In the link the bit holder is BHS 50 and are impact rated, so are the bits in this set.
There’s the “standard” bit holder, and this is only Centrotec compatible.
Namely the BHS 60 CE.
