Increased "Recent Posts" Listing to 100

Everyone,
In response to member requests, I have increased the number of recent posts that appear on the home page of the forum to 100.  It had been set at 25 by default, but with the increased activity on the forum displaying 100 posts at a time does make more sense.

The only downside is that it now takes a bit more effort to scroll down to the "Forum Stats" section.  Then again, it's not too much effort!

As a quick summary, there are various ways to see the latest activity in the forum:
  • Click on "Show unread posts since last visit"
  • Click on "Show new replies to your posts"
  • From the main page, click on a [attachimg=1] indicator, which takes you directly to a listing of the newest topics(s) in a board
  • Inside any board, click on a [attachimg=2] indicator, which takes you directly to the newest post(s) in that topic

Matthew,

Increasing the recent posts list is a good thing, at least for me.  The "Show unread posts since last visit" has never worked reliably for me.  I retried it recently, and it sometimes reports no new posts when I can see new posts in the recent posts lists.  So I rely on the recent posts list, and that works just fine.  Thanks.

Hi Matthew,

It seems that clicking the little  green "new" indicator does the same thing as clicking the "last post" indicator.  How about making the "new" indicator do what I suggested and take the user to the first unread post?

Hi,

Just hit the END button on the keyboard.

OK David, can you guess what Page Up and Page Down might do?  ;)

Ummm.  Scroll up or down one page.  As you can tell, I'm not very big on using keyboard shortcuts  It is nice to know about Home because I use the Recent Posts list frequently.  The fastest way to get there from anywhere else is to get to the FOG Home Page.  Using the Home key and then clicking on the Home icon is much faster than scrolling, especially on long threads.  :) :) :)

I should have also mentioned that inside any board in the forum, if you click on the "last post" icon, it takes you directly to the latest activity.

Here's a screen shot:

I think there is some confusion about what the "Show unread posts since last visit" feature is for.  It literally is only meant to show those posts that have appeared since you last logged out of the forum.  In other words, it's not a replacement for the "Recent posts" listing, which is a straightforward, comprehensive list of the 100 most recent posts that have appeared in the forum, in chronological order, without regard to whether you have read them or not.

I think it's understandable that there is confusion on this.  There are so many ways to view recent and unread posts, and they are distributed throughout the forum.

In my mind, the best way to keep up on what's new is simply to navigate the forum, looking for those "F" indicators, then enter those boards and look for the "new" indicators.  Just enter into the community and browse around.

Aha.  That explains why "Show unread..." does not work reliably for me, since I NEVER log out.  Then again, if I NEVER log out, one would think the "Show unread..." would never show any unread posts.  But it does.  So it is still unreliable, even though I did not understand its intention correctly.  Perhaps the title should read "Show unread posts since your last logout", which would make a bit more sense - at least to me.

Personally I find using the Recent Posts list the easiest way to navigate the forums.  I go to one place and it tells me what has been posted recently.  Works for me, especially if I check in at least once a day.

Thanks for the clarification, Matthew.

Hi,

I never log out either. But I think the session ends after one hour of inactivity anyway.  Others wise your time on the FOG would be 24/7  not just x days, hours, minutes.  The Show Unread Posts  Since Last Visit  works for me unless my session hasn't ended since I last used it.  If that is the case the option to view All Unread Posts appears.  This is probably why  it doesn't say Since Last Log Out.

All of the features of this type work properly for me.

We might have terminology confusion.  I never log out of FOG, but I frequently exit the FOG site and/or close IE.  When I return to FOG, I am still logged in.  By "log out " I assume Matthew means clicking on the Logout button on the right end of the button bar at the top of the page - Home Help ..... Logout.

Hi,

Yes, same here. No confusion.  :)
