Inexpensive/Effective Sawdust Solution for Dewalt DW735

Like many of you, I have a Dewalt DW735 planer. I’ve always found it to be an unusually good value if you want something portable and effective, which I do. Some day if I get a huge shop I’ll have something more substantial, but for now it does what I want and is a great buy.

The biggest problem everyone—including me—seems to have is how to capture the shavings. It’s got a great blower in it, but no portable vacuum I’ve tried can keep up with what the knives can cut.

So I decided to experiment a little, and I’ve found an inexpensive but very effective solution.

The materials include:

1—4” diameter plastic pipe
2—4” 90-degree dryer vent hookups
2—3” to 4” rubber connectors (to absorb vibration and allow flexibility)
1—toilet base connector (wrap pillow case around it, at base of pipe)
1—metal angle bracket
1—old pillow case while your spouse isn’t looking

Total is less than $40 at a hardware store.

The last picture shows how little escaped after planning ¼” off a 7’ piece of maple. It filled one-half the pillow case and only a smattering of dust escaped (see floor).

I've been doing the same thing with a spare dust collector bag instead of pillowcase.  Works great.

Very nice sir! However I recommend that you take care of that fool killer that protrudes from the back of your setup. Perhaps you could bend the bracket to follow the shape of the downward facing pipe. Especially if there are little ones or sharp edge finders like me around!

Do these not come with the trash can filter top any longer? My 735 is over 7 years old, however I found the filter top to work great on a 32 gallon trash can.

Piping directly into a tight trashcan (to get the coarse chips) and the outlet from that through a dust deputy (to get the rest) could be an option, if what I have read/watched about that planer is correct (it sadly dosn't seem to be available in europe) the internal blower looks to be strong enough for no additional fan being needed.

I don't even bother turning on my Jet dust collector any more when using the DW 735. The 735 just sends everything directly to the Jet DC plastic bag.

Here is a solution I came up with that works for me in my shop. I've been using it for probably 6 years, maybe more, and I have always meant to make something more refined but as you can see never got around to it. Still, this works for me in my one-man shop. It does require some manual interaction when moving from one machine to the next but it does work.

I have my cabinet saw, jointer, and DW735 planer all connected to this box which sits inside the planer stand. I saw the space under the planer as wasted space and so built the box to fit it. I moved the shelf to the bottom to accomplish this.

By opening/closing gates dust collection can be connected to whichever machine is in use. The gates for the planer and jointer are set up such that switching from one to the other closes one and opens the other. There is also a gate to the table saw and another port located at the bottom of the box that leads to the dust collector. The ports are located where they are because that's what works for my tool layout in my shop. They could of course be located where ever works best for you.

The flexible hose used with the DW735 is the hose supplied with the planer and intended to connect to the chip bag. Using some 4" PVC fittings I was able to offset the pipe so it does not interfere with the work piece travel path through the planer and the flexible hose allows for height adjustments. In the last photo the piping configuration is an elbow connected to the planer with a street ell looking down and connected to the hose. At the bottom is another elbow and an 1/8 bend (45).

This started out to be a collection box for the planer only so I could use it away from the shop where I didn't have a dust collector to connect to. For that purpose it has a pleated furnace filter installed on the top that let the exhaust from the DW735 ejector fan be exhausted from the box. When I added the connections for the jointer and table saw I had to close off the furnace filter else the dust collector would never draw a vacuum in the box. I made a pair of hinged flaps that seal off the filter when the box is in a negative pressure state (connected to the dust collector) and let the filer vent when the planer is used stand alone.

One of these days now that I am semi-retired I hope to build a better version of this, but it's not high on my priority list. Right now I am tearing out a 1200sf deck at my house and working as much DX as I can on 20 and 40 meters.

Nice work and explanation! Is there a fan in the jointer that pushes the chips into the box under the planer?

No, the table saw and jointer need the dust collector running, only the DW735 can run without the dust collector.

Here’s my version of the same solution.  [smile]

I never understood why Dewalt didn’t offer something like this as an option.  [tongue]
