I am looking to repaint a wood six panel interior door. The door was previously painted approximately 15 years ago with what I believe is Benjamin Moore Satin Impervo, an oil-based product. The paint is still in good shape except in high wear areas around the door knob and edges. I would like to repaint the door, preferably with a water-based product I can spray with a Fuji Q5 system.

I'm unsure what preparation would be required to put a water-based product over the oil-based. Does the door have to be stripped to bare wood? Assuming proper preparation, would a product like Kem Aqua Plus be a good selection for this application? Both existing color and new color are white.

Clean well with Krud Kutter

Sand well with 240,

Clean again,

Prime with, Smart Prime, Pro Bond, Stix, etc....

Sand between coats,

If you really want to use KA+, use Surfacer inlue of primer,

Sand between coats,

The surfacer is a very bright white, shooting clear KA+ probably MRE over it makes a really nice white finish.

Sand between coats.

Paint, I'd use Pro Classic water alkyd.

Thanks for the great reply Tom.

Krud Kutter has two products, one called Gloss-Off Prepaint Surface Preparation another that is Pre-Paint Cleaner/TSP Substitute. Are either of those good choices?

Plain old everyday Krud Kutter cleaner. The goal is to remove any dirt/oils from the surface prior to sanding. I do not use any of their paint prep products.

If the trim has deep brush marks I’ll sand with Vlies. It looks like a scotchbrite pad and does and excellent job of abrading all the nooks and crannies and typical sandpaper misses on surfaces with deep brush marks.
