I appreciate this is a forum to celebrate all things Festool but realise that a lot of FOGgers use Lee Valley Tools and felt acknowledgement of excellent service should be broadcast.

Ordered items from Lee Valley 22:25 BST on Sunday 6 July, UPS were on my doorstep with package in hand at 10:30 BST Wednesday 9 July, ie 60 hours from placing order in Ottowa to delivery in Cambridge UK.

Can only commend excellent service from Lee Valley Tools and UPS

Hi thistleman just wondering if you didn't mind if you could share what the shipping cost was and if any custom had to be paid
Cheers

If it's not a record, it must be damn near. That's amazing.

That does sound like a record, normally if it doesn't take a week or two Customs will hold up the delivery. What were the items and did you have to pay import tax to release the shipping?

I order a fair bit from the US and the distance thing has never been an issue. I've regularly had deliveries within a few days of the original order.

Apart from a few select companies in the UK, I prefer to deal with US companies as on a whole they generally still have the attitude that customer is king.

Order was for several packs of Accutrax marking blades to fit a standard craft knife. UPS was $27 which at the current exchange rate is just about bearable. No delays with customs, I suspect because the total order was less than £50. wanted to try the accutrax as an alternative to a mechanical pencil for marking out but no UK supplier at present. Have already spoken to Axminster who seemed receptive to the idea of stocking a new product. Watch this space

Shed 9,
would be interested to hear of your experience of ordering from the States. I am interested in some Veritas planes and the dollar price is less than the pound price. Once you adjust for the exchange rate it makes them less than half the UK price

You do get absolutely clobbered with VAT and import duty (plus maybe a customs handling charge) which reduces the bargain you might think you are getting

No, WHAT IS a record is when Lee Valley sends you a letter months after you bought a tool and wants to give you a discount/refund check since there was a price change with the tool and they felt you overpaid.  Cash back from the tool maker/seller after the sale, THAT is a record that I've never heard from anyone else... [eek]  [not worthy] [not worthy] [not worthy]

They've done it before.  Someone else here posted about it.  I bought 2 hand tools from them, a Router plane and some other plane.  Small rebate checks of a few dollars for each tool, but it floored me... [eek]
I'm sure if you call out to Rob Lee, who lurks around here often from Lee Valley, that he will elaborate on the matter since he's very easy to talk to here at FOG.    [thumbs up]

Not exactly the same circumstances wrt equipment delivery, however, this brings to mind something that happened many years ago (circa 1990)....

I was working / living in Scotland, and one of my work colleagues came to work one day and showed us an envelope - just a typical envelope a letter would be sent within.  On the front of the envelope was his name, and Scotland.  That's was all, nothing else except his aunt's return address in the USA.  My colleague received the letter SIX DAYS after the postmark in Texas, USA.....  My mail carrier is doing good if he can deliver mail within my zip code.....

So on several different levels, I think this envelope, making its way to my colleague with only his name and the country he was living in, set many records that probably won't be broken......  :)

Signed up for Social Security benefits. Needed to provide some original documents for the agent to copy and did so on Wednesday at 11:00 AM. Payment, retroactive to April ( my birth month), was in my bank account this morning. Less than 48 hours!  [thumbs up]

Baremeg55,

Incredible story, had me quite confused until I worked out your colleague must have been someone famous, come on spill the beans.........

No, just an ordinary guy.....  He brought the envelope to work, had the proper post marks/stamp and date from the Texas town his elderly aunt lived.  Only had his name and "Scotland".  LOL....  Most amazing though was it was delivered in less than a week!  It wasn't unusually then to receive mail from the US within 5-7 days, but those typically did have the full address....
