Is this legit: From Amazon vs. From Woot!

I got this ad from Woot! For a knife sharpener.  And I compared it with the same spec from Amazon.  The Amazon image and the Woot image both appear to be identical, except that the Amazon device has “Accusharp” imprinted on the side of the device.

The Woot price would be very good if it were the same.  But Temu sells a version with the (apparently) same image as Woot’s for less than $3.00.

Woot! Stands in the market place enjoying some extra credibility based on the fact that they are owned by Amazon.  But in the past when I wrote to them to clarify if the product they were selling was new and from the specified manufacturer, they said “Please refer back to the description in the ad.”

Do we think this is the same product with and without the imprint?  I am beginning to think that Woot! Plays fast and loose with the facts.

That appears to be the same image in the two photos as even the Phillips head screw recesses appear to be oriented identically...perhaps the logo was added to one or screened out of the other.

Not identical actually.  At the very rear of the device on one is a hole, perhaps for hanging.  On the other, there is not.

The Temu ad has a photo that also looks identical, and also lacks the imprint.

If I really wanted the Accusharp and was in doubt about the Woot version, I'd just buy from Amazon and be done. $3.89 isn't worth the hassle and disappointment if it wasn't what I wanted. If the price difference was more significant then that would be a different story.

Absolutely correct.  But I have been following the Woot! Ads to see if they seemed like a reputable vendor.  Right now, I would not buy anything for more that $40.00 or $50.00.

It was and still is deals site and as such you would expect everything to be at some sort of discount over what it would sold for elsewhere.

I’ve bought from them in the past and I have been happy with the purchases.

But…

They refuse to answer basic questions, and bury important facts.

They will not define refurbished vs. reconditioned. They sell items that are refurbished (computers, mostly) and items that have been reconditioned (also computers mostly), but when questioned they referred me back the the ad.

They have “scratch & dent” refrigerators, but don’t mention that they are scratch and dent until you get to the notes.  It should be in the title or subtitle.

So they do things that don’t build trust.  The knife sharpener is an other example of something that undermines that trust.

Woot essentially is Amazon, or a division thereof.  They sell returns and overstock items.

This is just one of those products that has a million brands in the save item. I’ve bought exactly that sharpener twice. They’re great, if you’re not a knife sharpening snob. And if you don’t know what i mean by that then you’re not one :)
