I make jewelry boxes as presents and mostly out of beautiful exotic woods.

This box had mitered corners joined with splines. When I cut the miter on the first side, my square showed the edge wasn’t square. I checked my saw and my miter gauge...... both perfect. I cut a test miter on some scrap...... perfect.

Turns out the sides of the box were not parallel. Somehow, the long board from which I had cut the 4 sides had a slight taper.

The taper introduced the error where the cut would be at 90 degrees to one edge, but not to the other edge.

The solution was to run all 4 sides through the table saw ensuring the sides had perfectly parallel edges.

Now, the miter cuts all were perfect and the box came together with no gaps.
