Jig Saw Accident

One of the salespeople in my local woodworking store had a major hand injury.

He was cutting a board with a jig saw when the blade snapped. The stub of the blade  seriously cut his left hand when the saw shot forward. My guess is that he was holding the board with his left hand and was guiding the saw with his right hand.

I guess the lesson is to never have your hands in front of any cutting tool.

I came close to getting badly cut a few years ago. I was using a chisel to pare off a dowel. The dowel snapped off and the chisel shot forward. It missed my hand by a hair. Now, I always plan for that to happen.

I always think back to a wood working class I took in college. I can hear the professor saying "Always keep both hands on the tool" Whenever I start to do something without clamping the piece.

Yep I did that once with a simple Stanley knife. Ended up cutting through my nerves and tendons in my ring finger. I had to have micro surgery couldn't work for about 8 weeks or more.

Not good, cost me thousands and my finger is still numb today nearly 4 years later

Jig saws can really mess you up.  Last Labor Day I was using one (not a Festool, but a Festool blade) to cut some wide, long boards on sawhorses.  Bent over too far, lost my balance and everything came crashing down.  Unfortunately, when I put out my right hand to break the fall, it landed on the saw blade.  Came in the palm and poked out thru the ring finger.  Severed three tendons.

Still trying to recover range of motion and strength in the finger.  Not too much of a problem with power tools, but having to relearn hand tools, like how to hold a chisel.  Have modified a few tools to make them easier to hold.  Do 3 hours of physical therapy a day.

Practicing dovetails every day, got one right six months out, now I can get about 2/3 right.  Goal is to be productive again within a year.  Till then, I sure am glad I have a Domino! ;D

On the theme of accidents  but  a slight  change of topic a local guy in my area was  mowing his lawn  with a ride on lawnmower  and it over turned  and rolled on top of him.
He put his hands  into the spinning blades  to protect himself  and  suffered sever damage to his hands.

I have a scar at the base of my left index finger to remind me to keep both hands behind the chisel blade.  That happened 35 years ago and so far that was the last one!

I can imagine he did, and It certainly is not a good thing, but considering what the alternative may have been...
