The jointer/planer or planer/thicknesser topic comes up fairly frequently on this forum.  I did a short video demonstrating dimensioning of rough lumber using the J/P combo that may be helpful to those considering such a purchase.

Steve,
Thanks for posting- I've been pondering getting a jointer/planer combo and it was good to see yours in action.  I'm curious to know what criteria you used to decide on the Minimax model that you have.  Would appreciate hearing your opinion.

Thanks,
Gerald

Doesn't the dangling hose drive you crazy when you're using it as a thinknesser?

In the perfect world I guess we'd all have unlimited space and funds and be able to use separate machines [sad]

Steve:  thanks for posting that.  I have one on my wish list.

Gerald,
I previously had a Felder CF741 combo machine with the 16" J/P and power drive that I sold in about 3 days.  Once you have had a 16" J/P with power drive, you are not willing to settle for anything less.  I would have gone with the Felder AD741 at the time of purchase but there was a 4 month delivery time and I was not going to do without for that long.  I could get the equivalent Minimax unit delivered immediately so that is the path I took.

I also have a Felder AD741 J/P combo with Digi-drive that I purchased used a number of years later.  I thought I would use both for a while and then part with the one I liked the least.  That was 6 years ago and I still haven't decided - I like some features on each better than the other but there is no clear overall winner as both provide equal performance.  I have never experienced snipe on either machine.  That said, if I were in the market today, I would probably opt for the Felder with the Silent Power head which should deal with curly maple much better than the straight knives.

I started out crazy so had no where else to go.  If I wasn't lazy, I could have routed the hose over the top of the table eliminating any interference.
