Just received Kapex: issues.....

Just received my new Kapex.  Upon opening the box, 2 of the packing blocks were broken in half.  The saw was also not on zero bevel (normal?).  When the bevel is unlocked, the saw falls to the right 15* +/- before the counterbalance kicks in, and it makes a noticeable grinding sound (also felt in the handle) when swinging through the bevel range.  Already emailed product support and Bob Marino, but wanted to post here as well in case there is something else I need to do.  Haven't had a chance to fire it up and check the other functions, that's the project for tomorrow.  Thanks for the help.

Sorry to hear your Kapex had a rough ride.

The saw is shipped with the miter completely to the right and bevel at zero.

If you have not properly set the bevel knob, it may grind so check that. Also make sure the bevel lock is engaged to prevent it from falling over. I'm sure Bob will give it resolved for you.

If I can help in any way, let me know.

Thanks for the reply Shane.  It must have taken a tumble, though the outer packaging wasn't too beat up.  But the bevel was not on zero out of the box, so it must have been jarred (one of the broken blocks was the one that nests around the handle).  With the bevel locked, it's solid.  But when the lock is released it immediately drops to about 15* right.  No doubt Bob and Festool will help me out, just wanted to get an idea of how the tool is shipped and confirm whether it took a hard tumble.  No grinding when using the fine tune knob, only when moving via the main handle.

Just got an email back from Bob Marino.  Great guy and fantastic customer service, would recommend him to anyone.  Here is a copy of the email:

Hi John

I double checked with service to confirm my thoughts

Here ya go.

Bob,

The bevel selector knob is set at +/-47 degrees during shipping to allow the head of the saw to move if need, so it is possible that it may not be set to zero degrees upon unpacking the unit.

The unit will make noise as the head moves from right to left because of the metal gears, springs, and selector knob make noise, sometimes it can sound like a grinding noise.

It is normal for the unit to lean to the right because the weight of the motor is on the right side.

Thanks,
Lester

So I'm just going to start using the saw, seems like my concerns are normal operating procedure.  There is always the three year warranty if I need it!
