We have people from all over the world on this forum.  How did you learn to speak (write) such good English?  I am amazed.  People in Scandinavia, Germany, South Africa,  etc speak better English than some my friends and neighbors.  There is even the occasional visitor from Britain and Australia that does not do too  bad (could not resist).

I took two years of Latin in high school.  I remember about three words.  Of course, in those days  they were still speaking Latin in  Rome.

European citizens are increasingly speaking English or another second language as each country and their Education systems encourage/require learning of a second language. Other factors include tourism, industry, Geography and Political/economic relationships.

Down here we are not as fortunate to have such encouragement to learn a second language particularly in our ideal formative years. This is despite post WW2 Immigration

Even Stralian is languishing here, but not apparently in India.  [smile]

...

They make it easy to speak English with them when visiting. Most countries do a good job with second and third languages.

Not sure I qualify for this thread but:

From 5th grade on english lessons are mandatory in Germany. (There are even bi-lingual pre- and play-schools if parents want that.)

The true eye-opener for me was a trip I did with my grandmother to Cyprus, Israel and Egypt after about one year of English lessons. My grandmother didn't speak English so I got us checked in at the hotel, cruise ship and stuff... I was amazed what a couple of English words could do. I liked the results so to speak. ;)

In 6th or 7th grade I started using the internet regularly, I found a couple of English spoken/written newsgroups and discussion forums on topics that had my interest and I participated...

Much later, during a couple of years of employment I wrote and proof read manuals for open pit mining equipment in English for a big German company.

Prior to and after that, being self employed and having a worldwide customer base I use English everyday - it's my most important tool/skill. I also travel quite a bit...

Without speaking and writing English I would have missed out on meeting a lot of great people and making great memories with them.

Kind regards,
Oliver

Films're not dubbed over here. That amounts to a lot of exposure to the language, besides from school. Than the internet is basically an english-language medium. My daughter, who's twelve, chats with people from all over the world in some sort of english.

What boggles my mind is how many Americans, myself specifically included, think nothing of traveling abroad without even making an attempt to learn the native language. We just expect everyone to understand us, and for the most part they do.

Not complaining mind you...

When I was in High School (way back before i turned 39) my principal knew of my interests in agriculture AND construction.  I was not the best student, but I was not stupid.  Just plain lazy. My principal would call me into his office three or four times per year to try to persuade me that i should take Spanish for atleast a couple of years.  My mom tried to get me to take Latin.  To both, my reply wass "I have too much problem with English.  Why take another language?"  I did try Latin for about 4 weeks, or so.  The teacher thought I was cheating, my grades were so poor.  (A long story there) Finally, Mom agreed that Latin was not for me, but the principal kept after me. I never agreed with him, even tho he had my best interests in mind.

Years later, with my landscaping business in full swing, I began hiring foreign born workers.  All of those workers understood at least a rudiment of English.  They understood a lot more English than I understood Spanish and Portugese.

Also, along the way, I met a cute German lady.  I should have learned German.  She taught me to say "Yah" before she taught me how to say "nine".  that was over 50 years ago.  I do understand a little of her languge, at least enough to know when to shut my own mouth now.  She is probably smarter than I as she has become quite fluent in English.
