I would like Kapex hold down clamps with a longer reach. I was using a spacer for trenching today and wished they would have been able to clamp the work piece beyond the 2" spacer.

Seth,

I don't see why you would want this. Surely if you're trenching, you want the clamp to hold the spacer in place, and then hold the workpiece by hand. When trenching, the piece needs moving after every cut, and there could be dozens of passes needed.

I can't see anyone wanting to clamp the workpiece, make a cut, unclamp it, move it 2mm, clamp it again, make a cut, unclamp it, move it 2mm, reclamp it, make a cut, unclamp it, move it 2mm, reclamp it.....etc etc.

Unless of course you're trenching very small pieces? In which case, I'd do the trenching part on a longer piece and then cut it shorter.

JRB.  Remember Seth is from USA they seem to love clamping. I have  watched videos from our USA friends and they clamp der pieces to do one cut  were I would of just cut it holding the piece. They seem to have more time on jobs I think  [tongue] [tongue] [poke]  I don't think I have seen any uk carpenters have clamps on der saws I don't even know where mine is any more I took it of the day I got the saw and have never used it since.

I`m on the east coast of canada, been in the trades since 82, i have never used a hold down clamp or seen anyone else use one.

Well I wanted to clamp both the spacer and the work piece. I wanted to be able to clamp the work piece just for the outside cuts for the lap joints to make sure I didn't move the piece even a smidgen. They needed to be very precise for a good fit. The possibility of using clamps in the base extensions also exists, but only if the piece is long enough. Mine were not.  Yes, trench a longer piece and then cut it to length but that is not always possible either depending on the stock you have to use.

Also having extended clamps available would make it possible to clamp shorter pieces because the length would allow them to swing closer to the blade.

I think extended reach clamps would be a useful option.

I have run into the exact same situation myself. Hey I dont clamp when doing trim work or whatever you call it across the pond. But for fine work where a piece of wood can cost a 100.00 and a 1/32" or 1/64" makes a difference you bet I clamp it. A miter saw tends to move the piece as you cut, not enough to notice for some work, but definitely enough to ruin other work. The flex in the blade has ruined cuts for me as well in the past.

I never noticed any of that when I worked on homes. My quality either went up and my eye got more critical or the caliber work I have to do now has increased or maybe a bit of both. Definitely where work needs to be done fast clamping is out, but some of Seth's work is amazing and I am sure he would rather lose a bit of time than lose the material.

The Kapex clamp is only  mitersaw clamp I ever liked using... Therefore I used it all the time! Super easy to use. You can't compare it to the crap other brands put on.

Dovetail,  not so sure my work is "amazing"

Eco and Darcy, I too really like the way the Kapex clamp functions.

hmmm,  so that's what that contraption is for...  I'll have to give it a try sometime ::)

I've not used a clamp on a miter saw for ...  come to think of it, I dont think I have ever used one!

see,  we aren't all "clamp-crazy" over here!

I've noticed that that saw hits the clamp when I move it to the 45 degree position, necessitating me to remove the clamp and store it somewhere else.

I confess to ignorance/stupidity - what is "trenching." Perhaps it is something known but by another name?
TIA

They are referring to using the Kapex to cut a dado.
