I had my Kapex for three years, very happy about the performance, not quite happy about the OE dust collection. For two and half years, I've been using the duct tape to create a bigger dust shroud, and that worked great, just not look too good to that saw. I've been looking the right material for a long time, until one day it hit me when I was sanding a long board on the work bench.

I've been using a tool box drawer liner for sanding for a while, and it works great because I don't have to clamp work piece down, it's black and very soft, why can't I use that material for the dust shroud? So I replaced the two-year-old duct tape with more sophisticated black drawer liner.

I had about four months of test drive. For the straight cut, it will collect 98% if not 99% of the dust, for the bevel or compound cut, maybe 95%. Below pictures will show the saw after five cuts of a cheap 1/2" x 5" wide plywood - that stuff will chip like crazy, but the shroud seems to get everything into the vac...

I got the liner from Menards.
The shroud has to be double taped inside the Festool shroud, and short of the rib.
I cut the length about 1/2" short of the table surface.
Pictures pretty much showed everything else.

Hope this help out on the Kapex Fever.

Thanks. JZ

JZ Bowmannz,

Very nice idea!  Looks like you could even adapt it to any other brand saw.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Mike.

Yes, I did make a duct tape shroud for my beater Ridgid 12", and it worked great as well. I can upload some pictures later on. I am planning on replace that with the liner as well.

I shot a short video for the Kapex, I have to figure out how to uploaded it first - a little tricky than pictures for me.

Nice addition, where did you purchase the drawer liner material?  The video is marked private.

Jack,

The liner I used was from Menards, but really you could find them anywhere.

I think the video got fixed.

Thanks. JZ

JZ,  The video looks great and there is not much in the way of chips/dust.  I just got my Kapex and I'm waiting for my UG stand to put it to serious use.  I have it on my assembly table right now to give it a test drive and with the CT22 and 36mm hose there is not a lot of dust to speak of since my DeWalt left a cloud of everything even with the CT22 connected.

I am going to get some of that lining to see if the excellent dust collection can be improved.

Thanks for the idea,

Jack

Just got my Kapex.  And Ug wings.  And Ug stand (which i'm slightly skeptical of still)  [eek]  buuuttt- I  Can't wait to try this idea out!  The level of quality is there with the feel of the Kapex.  It's worthy of every ounce of upgrade and dialing in.  [cool]

how does it work when the stock fence or added back support are used. the slide action will bump and lift up the new boot i would imagin.

I had some trouble with the thicker stuff like 4x4 lumber the other day, and cut into the liner, but it's quite easy to replace it.

It's not too much of problem with added zero clearance back fence, as long as the added fence follows the contour of the stock fence.
