Kapex Dimensions

This is my first post.

I am a self proclaimed tool junkie and Festool Addict. This is probably the norm around here.

I haven't been doing much woodworking for the past couple of years but I am getting back into it. Cleaning up the shop, sharpening the blades. Getting some proper dust collection set-up.

Anyways I have decided that's it's time to replace my Dewalt CMS with a Festool Kapex. My problem is that I already have a fence system installed that I would like to alter as little as possible.

I need some dimensions from the Kapex. I did a search but didn't have any luck. Here is what I am looking for

1. Width of table

2. Min Distance from rear of the Kapex to the fence that allows for full motion

3. Same as above but with the dust collection hooked up

Brice, a huge Welcome to FOG!

I believe you will find that Kapex extend behind the fence less than any other 10" miter saw, so that aspect of using your current bench should be no problem.

Probably one of the on-line dealers could provide you exact measurements. All of my Kapex are at my shop. Tonight I am out of town.

Your best Kapex dust collection will use a 36mm AS hose, with can well be arranged to reach a Festool CT without needing any extra space behind the saw. We have just switched one of our Kapex from using a dedicated CT22 to direct connection to our shop DC system, with a 100mm pipe coming down the wall behind that Kapex. There is a Y-sweep on that pipe. One branch serves a reducer to the 50mm end of a short 36mm AS hose for the Kapex. The other branch of the Y serves a typical miter saw dust shroud. We have always used that shroud. That combo provides excellent dust collection. So far using the plant DC is working as well as using the CT22. The advantage is this way we use fewer bags. If this system proves out in the long haul we will do the same for the Kapex on the other side of our shop.

2. Min Distance from rear of the Kapex to the fence that allows for full motion - not sure what you mean here, but it's about 16" from the rear to the fence on the Kapex. I have mine on a MFT table and it's about 7" from the wall to the back of the Kapex which is more than enough room.

3. Same as above but with the dust collection hooked up - if you use a 36mm hose the above clearances will work.

I read the Review of By Brice Burrell and was sold. I then spent a couple more hours trolling around his website. He does excellent write-ups. Anyways my point is that I am aware of the using the D36 hose and have it in my shopping cart along with the Kapex, and some crown molding stops.

You raise and interesting point on DC. I haven't decided what I am going to do. One my my goals in getting back into woodworking it to manage dust as best as possible to keep thing clean and try and reduce contributing to any more to breathing problems that I already have. Originally I was just going to use the CT Midi because of the auto-switch feature but that puts the Midi in the way on the shop floor. The shop is small and floor space is precious. I still need to find a home for the Midi.

Another off topic question. I saw something about a 20% discount on the tools. Is now a good time to buy or should I wait for some kind of unknown sale that may occur?

I would add a second hold down to your list of Kapex Items. The one hold down it comes with, works so well I got tired of moving from side to side and just got another one.

Of course there is the Kapex shrine you  will end up building .... Oh maybe that is just me... [doh]

One option you may want to consider is to get one of the longer D36 hoses such that you can cut off a portion to use for your Kapex setup and still have a useable length left -- say, get a 5m hose and cut off 1.5m so you have a standard-sized (3.5m) piece left for other use.  To do this, you would also want to order the D36 Rotating Connector and the D36 Reducing Sleeve.  Just a thought.

So I saw in one of brice's photos that he was using a festool clamp in a t-slot. I think the t-slot was on the crown molding stop. Any preference on which style of clamp to use?

My only potential regret is that the Kapex does not come in a systainer.

Well, I pulled the trigger and bought it off amazon. I opted for next day shipping for 3.99. You gotta love next day shipping on something that's the size of a small refrigerator.

Am I worthy?

I still need to get the D 36 AS hose and some other bits but I should be able to keep myself busy in the mean time getting this installed to my fence system.
