Hi, I purchased a Kapex during the RECON sale and it arrived today and overall it's in very good condition but when I opened it up I noticed right away that it had some damage due to the shipping, the saw was shipped with the miter all the way to the right instead of left which is how the manual says it should be transported and a slight bevel and it appears that during the shipping there was some slight movement with either the slide or the head and it was rubbing up against the fence causing the paint to be worn away and the fence to be damaged a bit on the top.

If this was new I would send it back with out question but I'm wondering if Festool will take care of this since it is a refurbished tool but it appears the damage was done through shipping rather then how the saw was. I've attached a few pics to show the damage.

First - why not contact Festool first if you have an issue so they can resolve it for you instead of posting it here.

Second - that does not look like shipping damage but damage from being used. It's a reconditioned tool after all, so little blemishes like this are to be expected.

Of course you'd send a new tool back right away, only logical. But you chose reconditioned.

Recon or not ,if the damage was cause because the idiot at Festool don't know how to box it up correctly .They should fix it some how .If the damage occur before shipping then you're stuck with it .Get some touch up paint and it good as new .

Pretty obvious the issue is cosmetic only and the saw looks otherwise (from the limited view of the pix) quite clean.  I would consider whether the price you paid is reasonable in view of this minor blemish.  Every time you ship the opportunity for further damage of a non-cosmetic nature is there.  I sure wouldn't ship it back if the saw is otherwise good.

My reconditioned Kapex had the same rub mark, from the previous user.

If the fence has a burr on the edge, grab a fine mill file and knock it out of existence, and move on.

Remember, you're buying a previously used tool.

I'm kinda glad he posted.  Whether he did so before , during or after he contacted the mother ship.  It's more info for everyone considering the recon sale.  Just one more data point towards an informed decesion. Consider it a PSA.

I don't know how you guys use your saws, but mine doesn't show those kind of marks from cutting wood.  So I have to disagree with you Alex.  It looks like rub wear in the wrong closed position during shipping.  And even if it were from use, then that Kapex is crap because it's misaligned to such a degree that the castings are rubbing.  [scared]

Green - did the saw come zip tied ?

There has been at least one thread hear about PROPERLY shipping a kapex and it isn't to the right , loose.  Come on FT, you came up with the guidelines , how come you can't follow them ?

Too busy, don't care ?  Seems to be a lot of missed issues with these recon tools in this sale.  Not just kapex. So many that it can't be a bad day or rogue employee.  Because I'm guessing there are more issues than get reported on FOG.  Were it me, I'd have the service manager or what ever you call the position responsible front and center to explain the gaffs.  FT just can't afford more bad publicity on Kapex, can they ?  And this one was entirely preventable.

"It looks like rub wear in the wrong closed position during shipping."

You do realize when you use the saw for a compound miter cut you HAVE TO MOVE THE FENCE TO CLEAR THE HOUSING? RIGHT?

If you repeatedly forget to move the fence for this type of cut, you will continue to hit the fence creating this damage during normal usage.

So no it is not necessarily shipping damage.

I am not suggesting that it is not in fact shipping damage but to make a blunt statement that it is without knowing the facts is not a PSA.

Personally knowing these types of situations come up from time to time on reconditioned sales, it would seem prudent for the manufacturer to take a few pics of the tool before it is shipped so that normal wear and tear can be distinguished from shipping damage. Then they can just increase the price of the reconditioned tool to cover that labor of documenting the cosmetic damage. Or they could take the pictures and send it to the purchaser so they can determine if the level of cosmetic damage is acceptable for the final purchase and the product is shipped and add a little bit more to the price of the reconditioned tool. And then if the purchaser is ok with the photos and the item is shipped and the purchaser is not satisfied with the condition they can return it fully post paid both directions and then manufacturer can increase the price of the reconditioned tool even more to cover the "absolute" customer happiness policy". So at the end of the day, the reconditioned tool will sell for 10% more than a brand new one.

It is a used tool at a discount. The more the discount the more the cosmetic damage. If you got a 5% discount it should look better than if you got a 25% discount.

From Festool Recon site FAQ
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do reconditioned tools include a warranty?

Festool offers a one year warranty for all reconditioned tools sold on festoolrecon.com. In order to obtain a one-year warranty, no tool registration is required.

What is the condition of refurbished tools?

Reconditioned tools can include gently used tools and discontinued items. Used tools are inspected by Festool trained technicians. All tools meet Festool’s high performance and quality standards. However, you should expect them to have visual blemishes.

What is the return policy for tools bought on festoolrecon.com?

All sales on festoolrecon.com are final.

This is ideal situation, and any discrepancies between a buyer's expectations and the actual tool sold would be eliminated if pictures are available. However, from a practical point of view, since they are recond. units, Festool may consider it too much work to do so vs the prices they are asking for those units (30% off or so?). It is a lot of work of taking photos, assigning them properly to the unit, etc.

I do agree that the OP's post was a PSA IF he had already contacted Festool first as per the guideline laid out on the top of the Forum, an issue we have covered before. Had he or had he not?

So no it is not necessarily shipping damage.

I understand it could be caused by use but you would need to be very careless to do this the main reason why it looks like it was from shipping is that the damage is in the spot of contact of the saw head and fence on how the saw was shipped. The saw was shipped in full 45 degree miter and a slight bevel which made the two points of contact line up perfectly.

Fair point Rob.  I guess I hang around more talented people that know how to use their tools and don't throw away the owner's manuals first thing.

I am willing to give FT the benefit of the doubt on it then.

What I'm not going to give them a pass on is they're not following their own guidelines for shipping the saw to the customer.    Lazy, careless , or both.  And like I said - I don't think they can afford to not get it right with this tool given its recent history.
