Kapex stalling out

Recently I was cutting mdf crown molding and thought the little bit of smoke I thought was in the air was from the blade binding on the material. I have clean, sharp blade so thought it was funny but carried on and finished my tasks. A couple days later my next cuts were through some 6/4 kiln dried ash and I could barely make the cut without the saw losing all its power. When running the saw wide open and the blade not engaging any material, there is a lot of arc'ing going on in the motor housing. I unplugged the saw and pulled out the brushes and they are barely worn at all, although the contact surface had some scoring in it. I went to spin the blade by hand to inspect the armature and it has a few rough areas on it, and something now clicks inside the motor housing area when the blade is manually spun. Have I lost a bearing on the motor? I bought this saw probably 8-9 years ago but I am only on its second blade and only pull this saw out for detail work. I do not woodwork full time and would consider this saw barely used. I hope I do not have to put hundreds of dollars in to this....

yep, you've got a kapex with the notorious motor problem that wasn't a problem until it actually was.  Sort of.

Call / email Festool to initiate a repair, with luck they'll replace it out of goodwill.

The dreaded puff of smoke...

and another one bites the dust.

Festool service covered the labor to repair mine.  I paid for the parts and shipping both ways.

I have read about them doing this for others as well but heard more recently that they were charging the full rate.

Good luck!

If it's indeed one of the smoking cases, the consolation is that after the fix (with the new, improved parts), the problem should go away for good.

Those of us having the EB model can only pray and hope.... [sad]

Just sent my Kapex in today. Bought it in Nov 2014 and except for the 2 years it was boxed awaiting my new workshop, I have used it lightly. Thought I was going to be lucky with it until last week when I noticed a strange smell. Wasn’t a “hot electrical” sort of smell and in fact I thought it was my CT Midi. Two days ago the saw stopped spinning up and the blade seemed to have a wobble. My hope is that the repair bill won’t hurt too much. Was already $180 to ship it via UPS to Indiana.
