My contention is that if discounting was allowed our investment in the tools we have purchased would diminish. Let us make it clear to the powers who be at Festool that WE DON'T WANT THIS!

Keep in mind as well. Festool's hold their value!! So if you ever do decide to sell them you may get all of your money out of them.  ;D

I agree 100%. It's very important that we maintain the value of our investment. Say NO to discounting.

Would I like stability in prices or no discounting?  I'm not sure if I understand what you are asking.  Do you want to know if I don't want some stores to be able to sell for less than other stores or if I think the prices should remain stable (think $405 to $450 for the same router)?

Tom.

I don't buy tools as an investment. There are many better vehicles if you are looking to invest. I, like most people, prefer to pay as little as possible for my tools. It wouldn't bother me a bit if Festool sold through Amazon which is a lower cost distribution channel than what they are currently using. I also wouldn't expect it to have a dramatic effect on the end user price maybe a drop of 5-10% but I certainly wouldn't complain and am quite happy with the level of service provided by Amazon or other on-line retailers.

For me the lower the price the better.  With that said quality and price go hand in hand.

I just bought a Domino before the price hike for 750$.  If I choose to sell it I can get about 700-750 with the new price increase.  The reason for little to no depreciation is because of the perceived quality and value.
Let's say the Domino was realistically priced at 450$ I would not expect the resale value to be a lower percentage?

It's all relavent to the market and culture your buying in as well.

Europeans pay more for high end goods than Americans, this is because europeans are more likely to pay the premium up front because they know the product will last.  They are also more likely to read the manual and maintain the tool.
I have been accustomed to the buy low and throw away mentality.

Prior to Festool I wouldn't be caught dead vacuuming it's storage case let alone windexing it.
So for me, buying Festool has pychologically enhanced my "type A"  characteristics.
Hi my name is Victor and I have Fest..anally personality.

Kidding of course!   Boy I miss Festeringtool..... Not!  He would have a field day with this post.

Woodentop--

You seem to have omitted the sixth possible answer to the poll:

"Even though the resale value of things I own might possibly be affected,  I agree that it's simply none of my business what anyone else pays for anything, except of course for my own services and products."

I'm sure it's just an oversight...

I would like to see disconting take place.  Right now the festool market share in the U.S. is small.  As the market share increases more and more people will be selling tools on the secondary market.  Supply and demand will eventually lower the prices of the secondary market even without initial discounting.  I bought Festool for their quality and for their ability to make my projects better.  Right now demand is strong and people reselling will benefit.  This condition will likely remain so for several years. I would doubt that the kind of resale prices will last forever.  Buy your tools to use them, not as an investment.  ;D

I certainly hope no one here believes power tools to be an investment...We should be leasing these tools if we were really on top of it.

J. Paul Getty "If it appreciates BUY IT" , "If it depreciates LEASE IT".

The tools are an investment, just not in the traditional way. They make us money by giving us safety, speed and more productivity while enjoying every minute of it. Being happy is more important than money and if we can work everyday and love what we do because of the tools they are an investment. An investment in making us more happy productive people. And people with bigger bank accounts due to the awesome items we can make with our Festools!

LESS IMPORTANT SIDE NOTE* These tools do monetarily keep their value. If you use a tool 3 years and sell it for 20.00 - 50.00 less than you paid, in my eyes you made some money. You could never rent a sander for 3 years for 50.00!

You bet tools are a investment,

unless of course they sit on the shelf under that Matisse.

For me, they are tools to make money, in this business

the more efficient the tool and user the higher the return.

So in that regard I am all for high prices and no discounting,

see, it keeps the riff-raff out.

Take some of the real specialty tools that have shown up in

the , lets think of a polite term, the home owner/ hobbiest market.

Sliding table saws?  Shop bots. Laser engravers. The carve write.

Any of the boys who are my competition around here, who right this very minute

are belly up at Clancys realized these tools were in their price range...

Might just rethink that weekly bar bill and invest in their company's instead.

I like having them say "Howd he do that?"

No Folks, for me stuttering sticker shock is a good thing.

I don't want these tools sold at any store.  I would'nt mind getting a small discount when purchasing multiple tools or accessories.

festool holds there value because of there quality on tools not because its discounted.

i would like to see stores be able to sell it for what they like.
if they can still make a profit and sell it for less then the guy down the road good on them

At least we know where we are with the prices being stable. I don't like buying anything and then finding it was available elsewhere at X - 15% or some such. And when I come to sell the odd tool, to date, I have been able to raise a sensible sum towards my next purchase.....long may this continue. It's one thing the Commies got right (dare I say).

i cant make my choice on the voting poll

i too want price stability and definatly not by giving discounts to people just walking off the street for a single purchace

however i would be very interested in the "tool points" system

why?

it gives a discount to people who directly and genuinely buy festool goods so have prooved their brand loyalty

this the end of me being reasonable and objective in this post and the begining of a rant  ::)

this is however the uk, and festool uk have no absolutly no interest in what ever form of giving anything away for any reason at any time under any circumstances

and the prices we pay for festool are way in excess of the north american market

well i exagerate BUT ONLY VERY VERY SLIGHTLY

about three years ago festool uk gave away a few dozen tee shirts to their dealers

i believe it was one tee shirt per dealership. the guys in the dealerships had to enter lotteries to get them

end of rant  ::)  ;D

DD,

Good point, I've added a section in the poll to account for this. Now I wouldn't mind a discount for people like us that are total devotees. As long as the ordinary man in the street can't benefit from discounts that would be OK.

thats the reason, festool themselves collate the information

new rant against festool uk ::)

mind you, i wouldnt trust festool uk to keep the information honestly, theyd find a way to reduce the points

or

ensure they were totally valueless in the first place

end of new rant

they only give the offers out after ive bought the tools  ::)

they didnt used to do it when i started buying the tools  :-[

if fact

im sure they check the warranty forms first to check ive bought the latest tool

BEFORE  they announce the offers ;)

on a more serious note

thats why i like the idea of tool points better

the offers in the uk offer are time limited and require very large purchaces, often of tools i already have
