Kreg Plunge Track

I haven't been able to find this specific information anywhere, and thought other's might have a similar question. I have the Kreg plunge saw and track. I purchased a square guide to attach to the track on Etsy that was sold as compatible with the Makita but it fits. I was curious if there might be other accessories and noticed that most square guides like the Insta-Railsquare are sold as compatible with the Festool/Makita track. So I went searching for track dimensions to compare.

I could not, in my searching, find any detailed specifications for the guide tracks except for a Festool one done by Peter Millard.

So I measured the Kreg with my (bargain bin Husky) digital calipers and noticed that they are identical except for the placement of the interior extrusion.

[attachimg=2][attachimg=3]

They are the same width (183mm) and have the same interior (12mm), exterior (16mm) and overhangs (8mm) on the over and under extrusions. The only difference is on the Kreg the interior extrusion is 53mm away from the exterior extrusion and 98mm from the cut line whereas the Festool's interior extrusion is 32mm away from the exterior extrusion and 119mm from the cut line. So you could, theoretically, purchase a Festool track, cut off 21 mm from the width and use the Kreg plunge saw with it (Edit: it occurred to me that this might not work if 32mm area between the interior and exterior extrusion are not wide enough for the base of the Kreg but I could measure later to confirm). The Festool would, likewise, work on the Kreg track but overhang by 21mm.

Please note that the printout from Peter is to scale, and I verified it by measuring, except for the distance between the interior extrusion and cut line. The 8, 16, 12 and 32mm are spot on, but the 119mm was very short. I didn't jot that number down, but you can tell that the diagram appears to show the Festool track as narrower than the Kreg, but the Kreg is 183mm.

Now, how did the Etsy rail guide designed for the Makita fit on the Kreg, and would other brand's rail guides work? I'm fairly confident, 99%, the rail guide squares from Insta and TSO would not work on the Kreg because they attach at 2 points, the interior and exterior extrusions. The Etsy only attaches to the exterior extrusions, and the exterior extrusions are identical in size, so it works. I suspect all the available clamping tools and guides that attach to only one extrusion would work across both tracks because the extrusion sizes are identical.

One final note is that this does not take into account that the two saws, as I understand it, orient in opposite directions. In my pictures, the profile of the Kreg track is from the end of the track, not the beginning, because the saw on the Kreg is on the users left hand side. Hopefully someone finds this helpful or useful. Let me know if you are interested in a picture of the Etsy rail guide square.

This is fantastic info, thank you!  I would love to see a picture of the track square you purchased.  I also have the Kreg track saw and I love it.

I will snap a picture of it this afternoon and upload. To further confirm that the width on the Festool, Kreg and Mikata tracks are identical, I purchased a FastCap 02896 Track Rack Systems from Amazon. It works beautifully to store the track safely and, essentially, makes it take up zero garage space.

Track square and storage. The storage is brilliant.

More information. The TSO parallel track guide quick connectors listed as "Featool compatible only" fit the Kreg track.

I thought that the patent application might shed some light.  It does not seem to, but it is one page long and an interesting document in that it shows where Kreg's purpose was different from Festool's.

That looks like an application for a different type of track system, and the applicant is Affinity Tools. I know Affinity owns and sells Bora tables and accessories, but don't know if they own Kreg. From my very limited search, Kreg is not owned by Affinity.

To view the additional images, I believe you click on the left/right arrow buttons at the top of the section.

I had to click "full document" to see all the pages.  No dimensions anywhere.  So not helpful here.

This lines up with what I measured, and the only material difference is the location of the interior t-slot on the Kreg is shifted 20mm closer to the cut line and 20mm further away from the exterior t-slot.

That should mean that pretty much any/all of the accessories/clamps/stops will work, just not the saws themselves, because the groove in the baseplate is shifted.

Except rail squares that have to be attach to both t-slots simultaneously, which most of the popular options do. As long as the accessory attaches to only one t-slot, you are correct they are interchangeable. If an accessory needs to attach to both, it won't work.

Yes, I guess I should have said most or some, because the parallel guides, rail guides/dogs, clamps, and stops, will all work. It's really only the rail squares that don't.

TSO published a comprehensive
Guide Rail Brand Comparison data sheet of different guide rail extrusion profiles brands. Available to you and other woodworkers on www.TSOproducts.com/Support

Just scroll down the page for the heading Guide Rail Brand Comparison in big bold letters.
There is quite a bit of other helpful information in that section, as well. Comments are welcome.

We appreciate the various posts on this thread and welcome comments and questions as they relate to the TSO accessories suitable for use with the KREG system.
