Attachment wasn't behaving itself when I tried to view it. Anyone else with the same problem or is it just me?

Every once in awhile I'll do a staircase. This one iron and wood.

These stairs were originally designed for wrought iron. At the last moment they changed to iron and wood.......2 days before final inspection and closing.

No, these get a mission oak stain. Very dark. I'm not a big fan of the proposed color because the painters will use a gloss lacquer, looks unnatural. I didn't have the contract for doing the stain and lacquer or the time but I use a medium rubbed effect lacquer, and I charge more.

I'd be interested to see what that looks like. Do you have a picture?

Looks great. I assume that is alder, correct.
Next stupid question, what's the recipe or rather, what do you mean (technique) by "medium rubbing".
I have a proposal currently and want to use Alder but I want the grain to show with not too much contrast.
Tim

Medium rubbed effect is a sheen choice from Sherwin Williams line of pre-cat lacquer. It's comparable to a satin. The sheen in the pic above is from another painter, he uses semi gloss high solids lacquer (cheap).

And yes that is a knotty alder premium grade. Finished to 120 grit. Very popular in these parts.

Thanks.
I thought you might be doing a dye/shellac/wiping gel stain/clear coat type of rubbed finish.
That explains it.
Is the painter they hired using inexpensive lacquer or is it the semi gloss that you are referring to as "cheap". So many (dumb) questions, I know.
Tim

Yeah, it's what I consider cheap lacquer (just a basic nitrocellouse lacquer). I also use a vinyl sealer under my pre-cat to help get a good build and be able to get a good sanding powder.
