I never had problems using my Vix bits with conventional hinges, but with the elongated oval holes on Blum’s face frame hinges the bit would skid up and down while I was trying for the exact center.

My thought was that having the bit extend past the plunger, it would hold position.

I just tried this out. The point provides just enough resistance to sliding for positioning.  Then I pressed hard to set the point and drilled.

The result was that both screws were almost exactly in the middle of travel, allowing for the maximum of adjustability.

How come I never read about this anywhere?

It is probably old hat.  But for anyone interested, it works.

I would start with a center punch with a spring-loaded punch inside a tapered seat and then just use a conventional bit.

We use the Snappy 9/64th Vix bit in the CSX, no one in the shop has an issue with the bit “skipping” in FF hinges. The woods we use are, hard maple RSWO and walnut primarily.

The biggest issue I have with the Snappy Vix bit is we have to order the 9/64th bit from Snappy due to their length.

It must be me.  That would explain why this has never been written about.

But I can find no reason why I have this issue and no one else has.

Solved now.  But a mystery.
