Leica BLK3D

Ya Neil, the price is a bit dicey for me...but for a contractor I think it’s a slam dunk. How many times have you drawn up a plan and proclaimed to the homeowner that you’ll fit that dinkus into that corner “perfectly”.
Only to draw up the plan and transpose the 39.8” dimension that you measured to a 38.9” dimension and wind up an inch short. Whoops...that didn’t work out well.

I think this item will be a game changer. You’re already spending $1000 for a Disto and being forced to transcribe the dimensions to a piece of paper. Every dimension transcribed is an opportunity for error. Just take a picture and...move on.  [big grin]

That's incredible.  It may be 3,000 to 4,000 now - but just look where the future is headed.  Soon enough this will be a few hundred I'm sure.  It may take years - but it will get there.

Wonder how long before this level of capability is built into our phones?

New iPhone OS has a 'measure app' using augmented reality to measure individual dimensions.  Just a matter of time as more gets added and costs come down due to volume.

In reading more about this unit, Leica says that it's accurate to within 1mm for distances at/under 5 meters.

Leica is also working on fitting this to a drone for roof inspections. Think hail damage inspection. [cool]

A Business Development Manager at Leica, said "the system was born out of the desire for a democratization of 3D capture."

“We want to go to anyone who does documentation with a photo. Anyone. This could be electricians, window installers, site managers, architects, police officers, insurance companies. It could be the floorer, it could be the roofer. It could be anyone on the construction site who does documentation.”

"It’s designed to be small and inexpensive enough that every person will attach it to their belt before hitting the construction site. It’s also designed to require the bare minimum of effort to get measurements—take a picture and you get 3D data for free."

The "measure within picture" technology is already incorporated into the $800 Disto D810 so hopefully that 3000-4000 € price will come down a bit.
