Looking for suggestions to hang a screen door

Hey all....

I recently built a screen door and have been puzzling out options to hang it. The door thickness is 30mm and I had originally planned to use a 3.5" hinge, but I'm now realizing that hinge will probably be too wide and the pin will protrude too far from the door.

I also noticed that for the door to sit flush with the stucco, the holes in the leaf align in a weird spot on the jamb and would be drilled half in wood and half into the stucco corner edging. I also don't know if I will be able to cut a mortise for the hinge.

Some options I've been considering:
  • Find an asymmetric hinge with a 2"+ leaf on the jamb side and a 1" leaf on the door side.
    • Ideally, this would put the jamb holes into wood and the pin just outside the stucco/edging.
    • Not sure if I can cut the mortise for the hinge or if I'd need to surface mount it.
  • Add a single piece of 18mm cedar to the hinge side of the jamb and mount the door to this piece.
    • Cut ~18mm off the hinge side of the door, or...
    • Cut ~9mm off each side to balance out the stiles but this aligns the door slightly off center
  • Build a jamb for the screen door and mount it inside the existing jamb
    • Need to cut ~22mm off each stile and top rail to maintain a ~2mm gap
    • The door is centered but there are now narrower stiles
    • Space between the exterior door handle and the new jamb will be very tight. There's clearance, it's just tight.
I do not want to use exterior surface mount hinges that would require me to drill into the stucco (bottom picture).

What would you do?

EDIT: I put this into the Materials subforum as I was originally looking for hinge advice, but as I typed, it morphed into something different. Maybe it should be moved to the home improvement forum?

Thanks and cheers,
Anthony

I don't want this type of hinge

You could also just get some hole-less butt hinges and drill where you want the holes?

Well, screen doors really call out for spring-loaded hinges.

Maybe bronze would suit your esthetic? And while you are at it, bronze screen mesh is superior to aluminum or fiberglass and looks rich.

I lived on the north shore of Long Island, and many of the multimillion dollar shoreside homes had all bronze hardware and screens. They looked very rich. Pricey, but you don’t need much of it so it si manageable.

And while you are at it, a mechanical twist-to-ring door bell in bronze is classy.

Knife/pivot hinges top and bottom? There's also those surface mount type hinges that are asymmetrical when unfolded. This might avoid the issues with non-aligned edges of the jamb and door.

Nice screen door.
Maybe use SOSS hinges?
I love SOSS hinges but that would be even harder to mortise into the edging and stucco behind it. This door opening used to be a window and the stucco is an inch or so thick. More or less right where I need to mount the hinge.

That's actually not a bad idea. I could even try and cut down the leaf on a larger hinge to fit the smaller door.

I looked at some spring loaded hinges but not sure about their bulk. The house is white with grey and black accents so I don't think bronze would match. I like the idea of bronze screen, not for this house, but perhaps for the house I'm currently living in. This is a door leading out to the backyard so no door bell is required but might be a fun idea if I put a door on the main entry.

The knife/pivot hinge is an interesting idea. I'll have to explore that a bit more.

The asym hinge is what I was looking for, but I didn't find one with a big enough difference.

Otherwise...

any thoughts on simply adding the partial jamb to the hinge side or is that kinda weird?

Thanks all!

I'd go with the hole-less hinges, or as you suggest cutting down a larger hinge recessed a little further back to secure it as probably the easiest and best options given the flywire is pretty thick at 30mm.

Not a big fan of the spring loaded hinges myself, and if the door was extruded aluminium the knife hinges would be fine, but I wouldn't use them on a tall timber door, and the good ones suitable for the size and weight would be pretty expensive I'd think, but the door is then completely unsupported in the middle.

I think it'd be a bummer to have to trim .87" or whatever from the left and right stiles of the door to accommodate a partial jamb, the proportions of the door look pretty good as they are currently.

Is there no way to remove the existing stop on the hinge side of the door and replace it with a wider one?

As I have 45 years of commercial door service, sales and repair, I would use a Roton continuous hinge as they are available for 1 3/8” depth and would only decrease the door width by 3/16”
