It would be nice if there were alternative heads for the clamping elements that would have a thinner point of contact, like the low profile fence that came with the MFT-SYS-FX set, so you could secure thinner work pieces with them.
I drop a 3/8" piece of scrap between the piece and the clamping element when I need clearance for sanding or other work. You might try that until an alternative comes to market -
The Veritas Bench blades don't have a lot of jaw travel, but properly shimmed out they can be useful when sanding thinner material when coupled with something like the low profile fence: http://www.leevalley.com/us/Wood/page.aspx?p=64685&cat=1,41637
The Festool fence and the clamping elements are both way to thick. You should at least be able to work with 12 mm Baltic Birch. I think 9mm would be doable with ease.
And the screw clamps don't have enough reach. If they were designed properly and thoughtfully, you should be able to reach a work piece that cover ups or partially covers up the next row of holes.
It's time to do a little design work and provide some basic functionality to match the high price of these components.
