Maple Maloof Settee

I have a furniture show coming up so I figured I should probably start making stuff to fill the show floor. This is my version of Sam Maloof's settee. The seat is reinforced with 8 x 50 dominos and about 44 ish" wide. Most of the shaping is done with Auriou rasps, a Kutzal, and a Rotex (I have no idea how Sam shaped anything without one). Most of the grain has a nice figure to it (though you can't see it with my poor camera skills) and the plugs are black walnut. After sanding it to 400grit I wiped 5 coats of Maloof oil on and 1 coat of wax.

I took a course from Sam when he taught at Andersen Ranch.  He never worried about dust collection!  Most of his stock removal started with a band saw and then moved to angle grinder / sanders.  And lots of hand sanding.

Did you happen to try a RAS?  It might help with the faster stock removal.

There is a tremendous amount of hand work in this piece.  You've captured the spirit of his work well.

neil- would the RAS work as fast as an angle grinder? If so I'll order one for the next chair I build. The show is in Dodge City Ks. Its close to home so I figured that would be a good first show, and since its in Kansas I hopefully won't get stomped the way I would at a large show in a highly populated area.

I have not used a RAS but you have a 30 day window to try one out. 

A lot of Foggers swear by them for rapid stock removal.
