WHAT?

Tom, I hear ya, pun intended. I use my hearing protection as much possible, I want to be able to hear my cell phone ring when I'm 50. You'd be surprised by the amount of ridicule I get because I care enough to protect myself, while it's not a lot it is much more than one would think.

I got in the know about good hearing protection when I did a lot of target shooting. There's a lot to choose from, ear plugs to headphones with built in radios. Find something that works for you and use it.

I also catch a lot of grief for my use of hearng protection, and it is always from the same knuckleheads that are complaining about the ringing in their ears...I say "Have you ever heard about 'tinnitus'? " ;D

Wasn't he the first Roman to use power tools? Apparently they used to be really noisy in ancient times because he suffered no end of trouble with his hearing.

The first baseball catchers to use mitts got a lot of grief, as did the first hockey goalies who wore masks. The smart people win out over the galoots in time.

I hear ya! (sorry).  I'm an older coot (47) and when I was young I did a lot shooting and remember shooting my .357 one day without protection and my ears rang for the rest of the day.  It scared me and to this day I wear muffs or plugs.  My wife had my hear tested because she thought my hearing was fading and the dr told her no his hearing is fine  you need to speak up.  It pissed her off, but I laughed my arse off.

I did a lot of shooting and chainsaw work when I was younger, but the thing that did me in was when I was about 20 or 21, I went to a Ted Nugent concert and was about 10 feet from a big stack of speakers on the stage.  I was deaf for two days afterwards, and I think it caused some damage to my hearing because after that I would get a headache when exposed to loud noises.  Now, I can't use a nailgun, saw or any other loud power tool w/o hearing protection. Most of the time, I do the foam ear plugs as well as the hard shell protectors.

I've been successful with a few of the young fellows that have worked for me, but for most of them, they have refused to wear hearing protection.

I always wear hearing protection.  I got a music degree and I had enough ringing in my ears from playing in ensembles.  The funny thing is I think nothing of blasting Lagrange  ;) but wear ear protection in the shop.  Some things never change I guess.

Tom,  My favorites are Sabbath, Zeppelin, and The Who, depending on the day and the mood I am in.  As you know, all are LOUD.  ;D

agree with that, with one exception, i dont listen to the who (although i accept that they are loud)

i cant explain it easily to an american audience

lets just say, i was a biker and would never be seen dead on a scooter

i just realised that even that explanation will mean nothing to you

google "mods and rockers" if you can be bothered

if the google hits talk about fighting mayhem and violence you have found the answer

Hi Tom,

I am familiar with the mods and rocker thing in the UK, and even though I would have probably been a rocker if I had been of age at that time (I was born in 65), and I most definately WOULD NOT have been a Mod.......there was a time in my life as an aspiring bass player that I would have given my left nut to be able to play bass half as well as John Entwistle, thus my devotion to the music of the Who.
