Measuring and layout drawer, part home made part Kaizen foam

I needed more and better storage for some of my measuring and layout stuff.  So I added a wide (52") drawer to a work bench.  Used a piece of 30mm all Kaizen foam (all black with aprox. 1/8" layers) and a piece of melamine.  Drill press and router table made the holders in the melamine for a bar gauge set.  Used a regular Sharpie and 10mm snap knife for the foam.  Ended up with room to spare.

Very nice set up Seth!  I am tempted to get a bit of the Kaizen foam for a few similar projects.  Is it pretty easy to cut and get the depth you want?

Pretty easy, not as easy as I thought it would be but after a couple cutouts  it gets easier.

  For the depth... an adjustable snap knife works great since you can set the blade length to the aprox. depth desired.  It cuts very easily the knife just slides right through even when holding the blade nearly perpendicular to the surface and pulling. Takes  almost no pressure which makes it easy to control and follow a line exactly.

Seperating the layers is a bit harder. Once you find the "edge" and get it started just keep sliding your fingers underneath and pulling /rolling it upwards. Using your fingers to sort of wedge the layers apart.  The hard part is getting it to start seperating where the layers actually meet.  It is much easier to seperate narrow sections than wide flat areas.

Very nice Seth, wish I would have gotten on the woodpecker bandwagon sooner and ordered some of the one time tools. They look like functional works of art compared to plastic crap you'd buy at a big box store.

On another forum, there is a regular who signs off with
  "My rememberer is broke, but my forgetter is still working good"
I have a whole drawer in one of my sysdrawers devoted to pencils.
I can never remember where i put the last one down.
Instead of looking for more that 2 seconds without finding it, I just go to the pencil drawer.
That way, a pencil is never lost, but just waiting for my return.

i do something similar . i have a plastic cup of pencils on my workcenter.
i dont know where they go but i usually find a good fist full every time i give the shop a good clean.

they are usually hiding in behind tools and under them . i sometimes find them in the dust extracter bag.
i usually buy (or get ikea ones) cheap pencils for general work and good branded ones for acurate work
