MFT 1080

I am new here and a new Festool owner and this is my first (probably of many to come!) post.

I am considering the purchase of a used MFT 1080 that includes an  FS 1080/2 and FS 1400/2 and miter angle.

What is an MFT 1080?  Is it an MFT Basic?  I want an MFT/3, not a Basic.

The MFT 1080 was the predecessor to the MFT/3.  Major differences is the work height, the fence and angle unit and the extrusions. 

I’d stick with trying to get a MFT/3.

The 1080 is the forerunner of the MFT/3 I believe the dimensions are slightly different. The extruded aluminium is also a different style. There are a few improvements on the /3 especially the angle guide/fence which were a weak point with the 1080. (I am the owner of a 1080 and have only read about the differences others may have more info for you)

I'm going to provide an alternative opinion. If you've found an original MFT 1080 in good condition, I would jump on it. I would not trade my 23 year old 1080 for a brand new MFT-3. We have a MFT-3 at work, and my 1080 is significantly more stable. I think the somewhat simpler protractor fence is just as stable as the new model and it doesn't stick out from the table like the new one. Using the side of the track as a clamping surface, it is significantly closer to the table surface.

That said, make sure you're getting all the original parts like the fence stops, under-table knobs, track clamps, track aligners, etc.

If the track is the old style without the glide strips on top...don't fear those, either. I've been tempted a time or two to replace my old track, but my saw glides just fine on the old track. All the saws and tools work with both the old and new track, but I don't think you can join old to new.

The MFT 1080 extrusions were compatible with the "basis plus" extrusions.
Basis plus was the predecessor of the CMS (compact module system)

An advantage of the mft 1080 is that you can put a clamp in the top T slot of the aluminum frame. The current model changed that T slot into a V shaped valley.
