Has anyone had any experience with Abralon paper fro Mirka? Does it compare to Festool's Platin paper?

JC

JC I haven't used that abrasive but I have used other Mirka products. They make a quality abrasive, so I wouldn't see any problems.

they both look about the same, foam backed abrasive. the Abralon starts at a lower grits 180 and 360 then goes up to 4000

the Platin starts at 400 then up to 4000

Abralon is a bit cheaper at around 3-4 USD per sheet Platin about 4.50 to 6.00

there is an Abralon assortment:

Same as above, I've not used Abralon, but have used Abranet, the heavy duty version of Abranet and their Gold extensively. I've never thought Mirka's product are anything less than superb and don't doubt the Abralon will be the same.

Do the Abralon work with dust extraction? I assume the foam pad would not allow dust to draw through for extraction.

I think it's designed for flatting/finishing paint and clear coats/laquers. Standard practice is to do this with a spray bottle of some sort of water/alcohol/soap mix so it doesn't create dust and lubricates the pad.

I have and use both. They are identical and unless things have changed over the years Mirka makes sandpaper for Festool. We use to have a member who's father was connected to Mirka and relayed the connection. I don't know if he's still active, its been about six years since I've seen him post. Not much dust collection through the foam back but at the higher grits 800P to 4000P in my experience there is not much dust. Its fun to start with a raw piece of wood and go up through the grits to 4000P. You can get an amazing shine with no polishing paste needed.

I've used Mirka's Abranet for years and I find it to be a superlative product.  I'm now using Abranet with my ETS EC 150/3.  I purchased a Mirka pad protector and punched holes in it to match the dust extraction holes in the ETS.  It works great - abosultely excellent dust collection and fabulous sanding results.

I'm afraid I have no experience with Abralon, but if it's anything like Abranet you should get great results.

I have some abralon but I have not used the Festool stuff.

^this^ is funny in the context that mentioning Mirka on here generally brings out the pitchforks, wood and stakes.

I was in my local Axminster store on the weekend (they're a small chain of really good tool stores in the UK) and the resident Festool specialist admitted he prefers the Mirka Deros to the ETS EC, then looked around in a panic to check the Festool rep wasn't visiting.  [big grin]

The ETS EC is so close to the Deros it is scary.

There is not a lot in it either way... Switch or paddle, yellow or black, normal plug or plug-it.

In any case the screens fit on the ft sanders, and the ft papers can go on the deros with the pad saver in between.

Back to the abralon .... It seems like it should not be inferior to the FT papers if Mirka makes the same paper packaged up for FT with the FT logo.

Abralon is wonderful, much cheaper than any paper, and dust moves through it just fine. Not so good for perfect level sanding of flat surfaces like guitar tops as the scratch patterns are so hard to see you can't really tell when it's truly level, but if you're sanding out nibs between coats of polyurethane or just polishing up to a medium gloss, it's nice to not have it load up constantly the way every fine grit paper in the world will.

I like the Ceros, despite the recalls. I don't have one but would definitely buy one over the Deros which seems like an also ran.
