Miter saw bench depth

Hi all,

My miter saw has a 14” cutting capacity (based on my zero clearance throat hole), probably more like 12”. How deep would you build a left and right wing?

I’m thinking 7” is sufficient to support any piece I cut.

Cheers

I have a 10” Makita SCMS with a 12” crosscut capacity (the throat plate is 13.25”). I have a Best Fence system and the fence extrusions are only 5.5” deep. I flip cut a bunch of 14” wide material last weekend and never had a problem. Mind you that the saw base is deeper and I am mindful to place the piece across the saw base if it is extra wide. I also have some crown stop parts that act as stabilizers if needed. I haven’t had to use them yet. So if you want to make them shallow to save on bench top space you can. If needed you can always fashion some type of little extender blocks when needed for extra wide pieces.

Thanks, good point about the support the saw base actually provides.

Based on this I might go a little smaller, it means I don't have to cut a 45" edge on the top to accommodate the swing of the saw for angled cuts.

Thanks!

Yes, definitely swing that saw to max cutting angle on each side as you develop your template. I actually ended up with a one inch gap between the wings and the main saw base because of how my saw swings. I struggled with setting it up that way but it works just fine. Just make sure that the wings are just a smidge lower than the saw base.

I figured out a 7" wing doesn't hit my saw on both sides, so I think I'm safe.

For the height I was thinking of going higher than the saw, and shimming the saw up to meet it. That way, if I do replace the saw, I don't have to make new wings.

Thanks for the advice!
