I looked at a few different websites about this topic, and saw a few different opinions. So, I thought I was explain my exact situation.

I bought two boards that were rough-sawn, all four sides. They were 10.75" x 98.5" x 5/4". I didn't notice any weight difference between the two at first because I had someone help me with transport. But, when I began to cut them to rough dimensions at home for a project, I could tell that one of the boards yielded some pieces that were heavier than the others. The grain patterns and colors are pretty similar in my opinion. But, if one of the boards happened to be soft maple, and the other hard maple, would I have any problems using the two boards in the same project?

I have mixed hard and soft maple in some of my builds. When gluing up boards to make a wide surface, I use the same types. I have used hard maple for structural surfaces, and soft maple for show surfaces.

The boards that you describe are most likely the same. There can be wide variations in density and figure within any species. There can also be variations in density with boards from the same tree, and even within a single board.

Working with wood is a continuing adventure. Don't forget to enjoy it!
