My 2 new toys and some possible pitting on brand new bandsaw table

Hi,

I've just received my new Laguna LT16HD bandsaw and my Hammer 12'' combo planer/jointer. I've hooked both to my crappy Craftex dust extractor (one at a time) and have added yesterday a cyclone separator with a Thien baffle. So far so good except that there is one strange spot right in the middle of the table of the bandsaw. It's black and can't be waxed/buffed out. I can't feel it. It's weird. Any idea ? By the way, both machines are working perfectly but I do not want that table to corrode in couple of months. I've applied many thin coats of Minwax paste wax. By the way, I have installed Great Lake casters on both machines and those are also working like a charm.

Alex,

It's just cosmetic and won't have any effect on your work. BUT, for what you paid for the Italian version of the saw I'd call Laguna and raise holy hell until they sent me a new table. Threaten to send the whole thing back if you have to, for 3 grand you don't deserve beauty marks.

P.S. I have the 14" Chinese version(LT14 SUV) and it has a couple of beauty marks. But the saw performs to specs and beyond and I don't mind trading cosmetics for price. But you already paid the price for the upscale version, you deserve to get what you paid for.

If steel wool won't remove that, then some wet & dry with some kerosene will.

It could be in the "grain" of the cast iron.  Cast iron is porous and the sand molds aren't always perfect, nor is the molten iron always pure when poured into the mold.

I'm looking at the LT14-SUV and am wondering why you chose to install casters instead of getting the mobile base.

It looks like it is staining from rust -- I would try one of those rust erasers -- they work pretty good.  Personally I would not worry too much about it...you are bound to get other marks on the table over time with use.  You could also try one of the rust-removing products -- they work pretty well too.

Those are great machines and a great combo!

I am going to take delivery on an A3-31 whenever I clean out my shop.  I have heard that the mobile base only moves in one direction (in/out?) and that makes it hard to maneuver.  I paid for the mobility kit, but would consider going the caster route.  But it must be VERY difficult to get those casters on.  Does the arm connect to the mobility kit or to the J/P itself ?

The black spot is probably where someone put a rust remover on a rust spot and it removed the rust and left the black spot since the rust remover is acid.

I have the 18" Laguna with several beauty marks even though I keep it coated. Spots are usually caused by sweat dripping off of me and not noticing. Still does a great job.

I put casters on mine -- the Zambus work great.  You have to enlarge two of the holes to 12mm I believe (could be 10mm) for the post to fit.  The other two need to be drilled out -- if you have a a right angle drill or a Festool with the chuck you can jack up the machine enough to get clearance.  You have to take off the back panel to reach in and thread the nut on the post which can be a tight fit, but it is doable and once done, it stays put.  I used 2x4's under the chassis and two floor jacks to raise the machine up enough and to take it off of the pallet.
