Our son is pregnant, so my wife who is soon the be a first time grandmother "commissioned" me to build a cradle.

There are still a few things to finish but the shower was today so it had to be presented.

If your'e interest, a pictorial of the build;

What stops it moving side to side?   The legs are not attached to each other so as you swing the craddle the entire thing is going to wobble side to side no??  Or the arms are going to keep rubbing up against the legs.

One of the things I have to finish are the stretchers. Doesn't wobble as bad as I though it would, but it does wiggle. The other things I have to finish are shaping the 4 link, and finishing the finish. There was not going to be any type of baby shower, they succumb to outside pressures and my son hosted this party. Between work and loosing 6 weeks build time this is as far as it got. It is back in the shop now, I'll post the final pics in a bout a week.

If you look closely in the last photo you will see I cable tied the links the the legs so it could not be swung.

Yes I had noticed the cable ties but had just assumed they where their just for transport only.

Await the finished results  [popcorn]

Get more popcorn, a friend picked up my Domino and dominos this afternoon on his way from Kentucky to Washington State to do a job. Won't have it back until he returns on August 31st. Should get back to this project the first week of September, work permitting.

I might get sick of popcorn by then.  Ill have to change to proper food.

I can't make out the fine detail, but designs like this make me a little nervous where there's potential for a child's fingers to be caught in between the frame and the supports as it swings. I've never seen a mechanism like this one on a cradle before (though I'm not well versed in cradles).

The workmanship to date looks great!

He'll only do it once (yes they're having a boy). Oh, wait, he's my sons son, only once per finger before he figures it out.

Thanks.

Tom

Thats why we have 10 right, so we can break a few [big grin]

on a more serious note, the project looks great!  your son and daughter in law are very lucky

make sure to follow up with finished pictures!

Just on the safety note from a recent father of newborns- the finger thing isn't an issue, babies only use cradles for the first four months or so.  Then they usually move to a crib.  That's well before they are able to sit up, much less stand and poke thier fingers in things- which the baby would have to do to get to those swinging arms.

Cradle looks awesome.  It'll be a huge help to the new parents.

I know, it's about time. JMB, hope you enjoyed the popcorn.

Any guesses why the stretchers are shaped the way they are?

Short video of the unit swinging.

Changed the links from Ipe, to Leopard wood, the lighter areas match the canning.

Functionally they would allow for easier floor cleaning, but I'm guessing there's more to it than that.

Not the primary reason. Good guess though.
