New Domino Accessories - Waterproof Dowels and Handrail Fence

I have in front of me the Spring 2007 UK edition of a newsletter called Festool Facts: Newsletter for Professionals. This is a colour 4-page A3-size newsletter, and there are two items in it which I'd never heard of and are marked "New". Although I realise that UK and US availability of Festool items doesn't always match (eg we have the belt sander and Precisio table saw), I can't think of any reason why they shouldn't be available in the US after the Domino is released there.

Waterproof Dowels for exterior applications, identified by dark wood with distinctive grain and a special symbol on the dowel. Given the darker colour of the wood, it should be possible to use this as a feature when making through tenons, where the end of the dowel is purposefully revealed.

Handrail Fence, for centering large circular stock, like that used for handrails. It appears that the fence will automatically centre the handrail left-to-right, but not up-and-down, and the latter will presumably have to be done manually using a suitable vertical adjustment on the Domino machine itself.

It stands for Value Added Tax, which is a Government goods and services tax that is added to most mail order/over-the-counter retail sales to the public in the UK. The standard rate is 17.5%, but some goods/services qualify for a reduced rate, and some (eg most books, food and clothes) are zero-rated for VAT. Tradesmen and businesses can often reclaim the VAT on an item purchased for their business, so prices are often quoted without VAT in trade-oriented catalogues or websites. Catalogues which are aimed at the general public usually include VAT, and it's important to make sure whether the price you are being given includes or excludes VAT.

You shouldn't have to pay VAT for items exported from the UK to the USA.

Like any tax, the rules for VAT can be pretty complicated. See the Wikipedia entry for an outline of the system, and a comparison against US Sales Tax, and the Government's own website to get more information from the horse's mouth.

Maybe you already have a "Domino maker."'  Do you have a router?  Do you have a TS 55 or TS 75 saw and guide rail?  If you have a beading bit or a round over bit or a bullnose bit of approximately the right size, you can route the edges of some boards of the species of which you want to make dominos, then slice off the beaded strip and cut it into the lengths you need.  They won't be compression embossed like the factory dominos, but they'll work.  Intentionally mismatching the radii will help prevent hydrolocking on installation and provide some space for the excess glue to escape.  This is not a new idea from me, others have posted this or similar ideas much earlier.
