Hello all,

Just bought a new CXS drill and was wondering if this runout is normal?

First noticed it with an Axminster 'quick change' bit - was awful! So tried it with a Festool Centrotec 100mm PZ2 bit and took this video, There is about a 2mm orbit at the tip. Is this within normal tolerance?

Seems like a really nice, ergonomic drill.

I couldn't see a way to embed the youtube video so have attached a link. Would really appreciate any feedback.

Thanks
Dave

No, it's not normal. If you know the tooling isn't damaged--prove it by using the tooling in other devices successfully, then the suspicion would fall to the tool...although that would be an unusual issue, in my mind. If you got the full kit check the Centrotec bit holder vs the regular drill chuck, too, to rule out those components.

A little runout is normal but not the amount you're talking about. My CSX and C15 both have about .25-.50 mm of runout.

Make sure the PZ2 bit is straight. Place it on a smooth flat surface and roll it along with your fingers or the palm or your hand. You'll notice any sign of it not being straight.

I think the issue may be with your drill or the Centrotec chuck as the video shows the Centrotec chuck moving in an elliptical manner.

Remove the Centrotec chuck and observe just the end of the drill shaft while it's rotating.

Thanks, I've just tried it with a long Festool centrotec bit holder in both the Jacobs and the centrotec chuck and it's noticeable in both. Also tried a Festool centrotec wood bit and i can see the point moving by 1-2mm.

Just want to make sure i'm not being too fussy!

Thanks Cheese.

The end of the drill shaft seems ok but it's hard to tell.

I just retried the jacobs chuck with a 10mm centrotec wood bit and the orbit is about .5mm With the centrotex chuck it's definitely worse. Like in the video.

If i look down on the centrotec chuck from above if the drill is sat on the workbench, the release collars noticeably wobble elliptically.

There should essentially be no visual runout with the Jacobs Chuck and a straight bit. Seems like it’s the drill. .

My new CSX was doing the same thing... unacceptable runout. I went to the Festool service website, filled out the form and sent it in (under warranty). I got the drill back in about 3 days. They noted that they replaced a gear and it now runs great. No detectable runout! Now it runs as it should. I recommend you do the same.
(I suggest you remove the chucks and battery, pack it very well in a box and return it as a bare tool. I included a chuck in my return and didn't get it back, but Festool later shipped me a new one at no charge.)

Good luck. It's a very useful drill.
