I'm building a new shop and had a question in mind. I'm 6' 2" and was thinking 42" cabinets and work tables and 24" to 30" assembly table.....any thoughts? Maybe a assembly table with adjustable height?

Hi,

   Welcome to the forum!

Given the choice I would definitely go with adjustable height for assembly tables and finishing stands.  Something that could be adjusted with the work piece on it.  I am 5' 11". I have a bench that is about 35". I don't think I would want it taller than that for all purpose wood working use.  42" sounds pretty tall.  I suggest a lower height quick build that you can add  height to with 2" x 4"s or something as a way to find out exactly what you want. A functional mock up.

Height isn't the primary consideration.  It is the length of your arms.  If you are tall and have short arms your working height would be taller.  As some have suggested, experimentation or adjustable height might be a worthy consideration.  To start off with you might want to measure from the floor to your wrists when they are hanging down.  Then go from there.

Just a thought.

In the operating room we set the height of the operating table so that the top of the patient is just a little lower than  our hands  when our hands are out-stretched when our upper arms are held  [embarassed]against our bodies and our elbows are held at a right angle.  I hope that is an understandable sentence.  It is easier to do than describe.

Thanks very much for the input! I'm thinking a scissor jack operated assembly table. I recently set my MFT table on my make table and it was a noticeable relief in my back. The height was about 41". Thanks again

Arms at right angle  at elbow, elbows held against your sides, now lower your lower arm 10 degrees. You hands are now at the best height for you.
