New source for Loose tenons for Domino created mortises

Cinciannati Dowel is making some Domino type loose tenon replacements. I saw a small sample pack and they look interesting. The species that are currently available are: oak, maple, cherry, walnut, and mahogany.

I am not affiliated with them, nor have I tried them yet but they look interesting.

I talked to the following individual who provided me with pricing, the prices look about 12% cheaper than Festool at like quantities. Maybe we can get them to produce some that are wider and fit the widest slot, interesting idea.

Thought folks might be interested, I'm getting a few to test and will report back.

Sounds good i am sure being able to get them in different species will come in very handy. let us know.
 
I have seen samples of these.  You may want to compare them closely with the Festool tenons before you decide to purchase them.

I have never had a Festool tenon show splintering, and its hard to beat solid beach.

I apologize for not being clear (and for my poor spelling).  I wasn't comparing species.

In the testing we did with the samples provided, the surface quality of the Festool tenons were superior, allowing them to slide into the Domino mortise easily with a smooth tight fit.

Perhaps the provided samples were not representative of that companies product?  If someone else has had a different experience with those, I would like to hear about it.

I would love to get some of these festool dominos you are talking about. I have always had to pound them in with a mallet. The only time I get a nice slip fit is when I make my own.
I just made about 1000 6mm mahogany dominos for exterior use in about 25 min.

We are using the Dominos supplied in the Systainer Assortment.  I have tried, and also demonstrated for customers on many occasions, all of the sizes and they fit like a hand in a glove.  In fact, using the narrowest setting, they fit so smooth and snug that its difficult to pull them back out by hand.  So far, all of our customers have said the same. 

This is the first I have heard of Dominos not fitting well.  Have you spoken with your dealer or Festool about this?

I'm guessing that changes in humidity affect the fit.  Sometimes mine fit like a glove, other times I end up running the edge over a file once or twice before it will go in without a mallet.  Someone suggested nuking them in a microwave just prior to use, but I haven't tried that yet.

Everyone,
Randy Daniel joined the forum today, and I have already written to him asking about the loose tenons mentioned here.

This raises an interesting question for me.  Up until now, the sellers in the forum have all been Festool Dealers.  I think this is the first time we may have someone selling Festool-related items who is not a Festool Dealer.  If Mr. Daniel's company does sell Domino-sized loose tenons, he should have a fair opportunity to present his sales options to the forum.  I may have to change the name of the "Dealer Zone" into "Sales Zone."

Perhaps this is a trend -- companies making after-market items that work with Festool tools.

Just a thought.

If nothing else, the guy needs a fair shot at addressing any issues with his product.

FYI; CMT also makes cutters for the Domino machine, and they told us they will be introducing stave tenon router bit cutters with spacers to equal the thickness of holes cut with a Domino machine

I just ripped some scrap i had on site of 20mm stock. I ripped them oversized, ran them throught the planer one pass each side(to 6mm), and gang cut them to length on the slider with a stop block. I held down stock with a block as i cut them or they would get flung as the blade was lifted.
I saw no need to to round the corners as they fit nicely in the medium size mortise with a little room for adjustment.  I am using the tenons mostly for panel glue ups.

The designation of "Dealer" needs to be reserved for those who are part of the official Festool network.  Otherwise, it will be confusing.

I definitely agree that Mr. Daniel should have space to tell us what he's doing.  I'm going to create a new designation for the forum.  Keeping it simple, people who sell after-market items for Festool should be called "Related Retailers" or something similar.  I'm open to opinions on this designation.

I'm going to make some slight changes to the Dealer Zone to reflect this, and make it more welcoming to after-market retailers.

I will invite Forrest (who makes Festool-compatible saw blades) and CMT (who makes Domino cutters) to join the forum.  Does anyone know who would be good to contact in those companies?

This idea of after-market retailers is a new issue, but I'm thinking it's going to become more important as time goes on.

It was Marcello, the president of CMT in Italy that visited our store.  He is the one that spoke to me about the companies direction in regard to Festool compatable cutters and router bits.
