New Van Racking

Picked up my new van two weeks ago. I am so excited to be able to stand in the back rather then crouching over dozens of times a day! [big grin] I picked up a Nissan NV 3500 high roof with all the bells and whistles. I spent a lot of time looking at all of the options out there and this met all of my criteria including being able to tow my 10k dump trailer.

I took delivery of it without any racking. I fought with the racking in my express van and I knew starting from the ground up would be much more efficient. I used a mixture of 1/2" and 3/4" plywood and a ton of pocket screws and polyurethane glue to put it all together.

The process started by welding a steel frame for the bulkhead and mounting plywood to it. Then I bolted the shelf bases to the factory mounting points in the floor and glued and screwed plywood to the roof ribbing. Also a rail was glued to the roof ribbing to connect the shelving uprights to. Then I got a pattern made up for the uprights and got to work cutting and installing them. All of the uprights and shelves were cut to be just shy of hitting the interior of the van walls and all of these joints were filled with polyurethane glue to lock everything together. For the shelves I made up a simple jig to position four 5x30 dominos to hold the systainers in place.

At the bottom of the shelves the open space is 38" so there is plenty of room for 3x5 cement board to lay flat. As you can see there are still some things to be worked out, but I have 95% of my tools back in so it's back to work for me! [tongue]

I'm quite impressed!  I am soon to be taking delivery of a Dodge Promaster low roof and will be up fitting the van myself in a similar fashion.  It will be great also to have a van that I can basically stand up in...the interior height is 65" (1651mm  [poke] [poke]).  Working out of a pick up truck has been a 5 year challenge.  Thanks for the pics...I may have to pick your brain a bit more when the time comes!

Bob

Thanks guys [wink]

Bob, Congrats on the Promaster I am sure you will love having it! I did look at it, the sprinters and the upcoming full size Transit unfortunately none of them had the towing capacity. Let me know if you need any help with your racking when the time comes.

That's a really well-done implementation.  I especially like the stepped design of the partitions.  Are all the shelves installed on dominoes or are they moveable?  In any case, sweet job!!!  Where do you keep your guide rails?

Looks like there are a couple in the 4th photo, above the Kapex, right at the top of the shelving unit and held in with a small clamp.

All of that beautiful organization, only to be ruined by that crappy tool bag.. [poke]

Incredible set up.  Makes me want to sell my truck.

I think you're right.  I missed that.  Thanks.

Nice racking, but man they are ugly vans

Yeah, yeah, I know.  You just want a set of Dagmars like a '57 Buick.

Nice size and nice racking! Very smart!

But the front of the van!!!!!

Why on earth does it need to be sticking out so far!  Makes the van look really odd!

Must be because it has a 8 litre v8 lol

What a cracking job!
I really do love to see pics like this to prove to my Wife that I'm not the only person love Festool tools so much! [thumbs up]

Good Work Matey

American vans are awful i can see why you all have pick ups and trailers.

But i love your racking and most of all the mini/micro storage next to the door for the little things to just grab!

Awesome

Thanks everyone. The front of the van has actually grown on me. It is very easy to see the front while driving and the overall length of the van is only about a foot or so longer then my last van, the proportions are just different. There is plenty of room around the 5.6 v8 to work on it, unlike most of the vans here. And I have to admit not having half of the engine in the cab really makes a difference in roominess. All of the interior options are really nice and well above what is offered on the current chevy and ford. It has navigation, xm radio, bluetooth, backup camera, backup sensors, built in ac electric converter,  etc.

All of the shelves are attached with pocket screws and glue so they are not easily movable.

The guide rail "box" was transferred over from my last van. They really don't move around but the spring clamp keeps them from rattling and I keep a bungee wrapped around over the face of the box just as a back up plan.

The tool bag is far better then the ol bucket organizers but is still a mess. I have had thoughts of moving everything into a sys toolbox but haven't gotten there yet. [tongue]

It is for towing the 10k trailer!

I just picked up a Ram Promaster High roof with the 159" wheelbase.  Has tons of room and needs lots of shelves for all of my Festools.  Got some good ideas here!  Thank you for sharing the pics with us, looks great!  Enjoy the truck!

In my experience, anyone who needs an explanation for horsepower simply won't get it anyway.  Is that offered with something over 8L :)

[size=11pt]

Excellent work, what really impressed was the little things such as the dowel pins to prevent systainers falling out.
