I have an OF1010 ..  When I plunge it down ..  It won't plunge back up again unless I aid it ..

Is that normal ?  I always have my hands on it and never really noticed it before.

I have other Festool routers that spring back up again ..  Wonder if the springs are worn ?

The of1010 has weak springs so it can work easily with the LR32guide rail system..
Just lube it up with some WD40 and it'll work like a charm again..

I had the same problem a year ago or so.. Since i lube it every now and then,
I had no issues anymore..

Gr Rick

Hmmm...  I had the same issue with mine.  I lube the columns with Militec-1 periodically and wipe off the excess.  Militec-1 is one of those lubricants that penetrates the metal and embeds lubricant into the metal.  The springs are still weak, compared to the OF 1400 and OF 2200, but the router will return to the up position without assistance now.

Anyone got a cure for one that won't stay plunged. Festool UK have had mine a few times now and never fixed it properly. You have to really crank the plunge lock knob and even then when you're routing it can just pop up on its own. Getting really fed up with it now getting to a stage now that you'd almost have to use grips to lock it off.>:(

Hmm..  I could sell you my advanced model that stays plunged without a lock.. but its a much more expensive model ..  [big grin]

Breed 'em. The offspring (pun intended) should be perfect.  ;D

Hi Phil (Festool UK) thanks for the email re my plunge problem. I've emailed you the details ,got an out of office reply so hope you've got it OK. Cheers

cleaned the posts up good and applied a thin coat of air tool oil,  works like a charm      plunged it a bunch of times and then just wiped the excess off

Just a quick note to say thanks to Shane for getting involved with the above. Shane spotted this and let festool uk know. They emailed me and got my router in and fixed it. I got it back this morning with what looks to be a fixed plunge mechanism. I also had a few freebies thrown in too. Thanks to Phil at festool uk.

Also it was just out of warranty but all work was free of charge.

When they provide such exemplary service, wonder why Festool UK aren't more active on the forum? There doesn't seem to be a UK equivalent forum, and the FOG has sort of become international anyway, so it would be nice to see some representation here, maybe even an Ask Festool UK sub-board?

I know that there are some colleagues from Festool UK that monitor the forum. I do my best to bring issues in the UK to their attention, but I also don't read every post/thread.

Feel free to post for any Festool country in the Ask Festool section and I'll direct any non-US/Canada issues to the correct people.

Shane

I have owned OF1010 routers since early 2006. I appreciate the spring action because I use 2 OF1010 exclusively in LR32 mode. Those springs are intended to lift the OF1010 motor.

However, like all plunge routers, the rods of the OF1010 need to be kept clean. As needed I release the router motor from the rods so those can be cleaned with soft cloth towels. Like Shane suggested, I use pneumatic tool oil (which is about 10w) as the lubricant.

The last thing we want in woodworking is a tool dripping oil on the work. So after I lubricate the rods of plunge routers, I wipe them and let them dry for an hour or more. I cover the base and rods with a clean cloth to keep dust from attaching to the rods. Then I wipe the rods once more and assemble the router.

BTW, my first OF1010 from 2006 is still in daily use drilling 5mm shelf pin holes. Hundreds of thousand such holes.

Funny ..  I used some Bostitch oil to lube up the posts on my OF1010 after this post and it didn't work ..  Still stays down..

I figure since it worked for everyone else, I probably need a new spring..  Add it to the list of stuff to do.

did you make sure your posts werent gunked up with a bunch of pitch or other gunk?  i cleaned mine good, even buffed them a bit with some 000 wool (make sure to blow out or clean off any left over steel wool pieces or debris)

did you cycle the plunge up and down a bunch of time to work the oil in?  I cycled it a bunch, then wiped off all the dirty oil on the posts, then re oiled and repeated that process a few more times.
