What lubricant, if any, should be applied to the plunge shafts of an OF 1400 ?  Mine's not even a year old and it doesn't always return to  its full retracted (up) position when the lock knob is released.  I can't tell if it's hanging up on the shafts or the lock mechinism isn't fully releasing.

I give the rods of all my plunge routers a good periodic wipe with Militec-1.  Let it sit overnight, then wipe it clean.  If there's any rust, I go over the rods with #0000 steel wool first, then wipe the Militec-1 on.  Be absolutely certain that the mechanism is really clean.  Blow it out periodically when it starts even thinking of hanging up.

Is there any corrosion visible?  If so, regular lubrication should do it -- I use T-9 Boeshield, which doubles as a rust protector and lubricant.  But as you say, it might also be the knob.  I've found that myself -- I think that I have released the knob enough, but will still find some drag on the rods, only to discover that I need to give it a slightly further turn.

Lester, the service manager for Festool USA, recommends a light machine oil. For what it's worth. Such as a sewing machine oil. Do not use something like WD-40.

I've had success on other tools with dry spray lubricants. I don't have any particular brand, though, and I haven't felt the need to lubricate the OF1400 to this point. The dry lubricant has the advantage of not collecting dust which, despite my best efforts at dust collection, still exists in the shop to some degree.

I've started using fluid film on my miter saw guide rods. It does an amazing job, and lasts a heck of a long time.

I've only recently tried some on my plunge router. But I have no hesitation to use it on any metal/metal surface, hand tools e.t.c.

Progold pb2000.  It's what Festool HQ NA uses in the training room.  Good stuff.    Use it on domino, kapex, routers, bicycle chains, etc.

So childish. However I sniggered at the combination of words too :)
Finbar Saunders would be in his element!
