I am building a circle cutting template that will have a 40mm double shielded bearing with a 30mm shaft diameter and a depth of 7mm. I plan to use 9mm thick plexi cut in the shape similar to the lewin router compass (image attached) BUT instead of semi-permanently attaching the router I would like to snap on the 30mm copy ring and place it in the bearing's center axle area (which is 30mm)

This will keep the CT's dust hose and power cord pointed in the same direction as I cut the circle.

SO MY QUESTION IS.... I do not have the 30mm copy ring yet and need to know how deep the 30mm ring hangs down (I would like someone to say 9mm or less) and is there a slight taper or is it 30mm from base to end?

I have the MFS700 and I'm sure it's great for cutting one or two holes now and then but I am cutting holes for speakers all day long so for $30 I can build this custom circle jig that is light and easy to use.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks!!

Seems like a good idea. I don't know the details of the ring but I looked at the picture on Festoolusa.com and was surprised to see that there is a fairly clear enlargement photo of a ring instead of the usual useless grainy blowup of the thumbnail image. Comparing the diameter to the height it looks to me like the projection is only 8mm max. Good news for you! But wait, then I looked at the other rings and realized they used the same photo for four different rings.

You gotta fix stuff like that Shane.

OK, the projection on mine measures 7.93mm, according to my calipers.

There is NO taper on it, it's 30mm exactly at every point.

Thanks Jonny that helps alot. I might have to taper it myself so that it fits in the bearing. 7.93mm is just the size to fit with this little project.

I might just attach the copy ring to the bearing and not worry about being able to take the ring itself out but just detaching the ring from the router. (That nice feature of snap on copy rings makes it easy enough)

I went ahead and ordered the bearing today. It should be interesting however it turns out...

I would think that Festool would have all the specs for things like the copy rings on the website. It would be nice to know the inner diameter of each copy ring as well.

Shane says they will improve the website to include all that stuff, I'm just prodding him.
