OF1400 dust collection with large bit

I am curious if anyone has rigged up something for dust collection with an OF1400 using a large router bit.

My CMT rabbet bit is quite large and prevents the OF1400 dust fitting from attaching.  The manual gives the maximum bit size for the dust fitting, and the rabbet bit exceeds it.  A 3/4 rabbet without dust collection leads to a major dust attack.

Unless you're going to have a second person hold a vac hose near the bit while you preform the routing operation, go buy a decent respirator and eye protection and just deal with it. Reserve yourself to cleaning up afterward.

Mike you can install the bit first then open the little sliding door on the dust shroud and place the shroud around the bit's shank. Then set the bit's depth (leave the router plunged), then attach the shroud. Remember not to release the plunge or you could damage the shroud.

If you can't get the shroud to work and you have a bigger dust collector you could rig up a stand & funnel arrangement.

Thanks.  I am all set now with these excellent suggestions.  I was able to fit the bit in through the shroud, as noted by Brice.  The stand and funnel setup looks handy as well.

Hey mike,  Well this is my first post on FOG.  I had the same problem that you had,and what i did was buy the bigger sub base for the 1400.  The shroud is much bigger on it, but the plate isn't much oversized.  the dust shroud attaches magnetically and its real handy, but at 119.00 you might be satisfied with the stock one, but ill add that the dust collection is much better with the bigger shroud.

Woody,

You mention a "bigger base" for the 1400 with a dust shroud that attaches magnetically.

I was immediately interested, but can find no bigger base, magnetically attaching shroud, or anything remotely close under accessories for the 1400 on Festools site.

Please elaborate.

go to the 1400 eq on the festool site and click on accessories, then about three or four spots down there will be a base that they call a table widener, thats the one.  when i looked at it at my dealer i wasnt much impressed because the base wasnt that wide, but after looking more i noticed that the shroud was just as big as the 2200, plenty more then i needed to fit the master rabbet set from cmt, and it was magnetic! I didnt know how to act! well the sole purpose for me getting the base was for the cmt rabbet set that i have, and it was well worth it to me
