Old tool cases to Systainers

.., you can get PVC "parts" at most of the big box stores as well...  Glue lam it together and make it your own!

umm...
are you confusing styrofoam with PVC?
This stuff is kissin cousins to PVC plumbing in homes.
A sheet of PVC is heavier than a sheet of MDF or plywood...
.
pretend it is a maple board

I stand corrected then. I was reading cpvc as in fascia and other type of weatherproof material.

Learn something new every day.

Cheers

Tool:        drill bits
History:        always carried these in a tote pan like a carpenters tote - I will see how well I like this - ideally it stacks better for road trips and T-LOKs with the drill kit I pick out
New Case: SYS 1 Vari
Mods:      ) custom foam divider
                ) custom bottom liner
.
photo 1) packed like sardines
Notes: I did not want these in the bottom of a SYS 2 or SYS 3 with a drill kit - wanted the bits by themselves.
.
photo 2) Sears drawer liners
.
photo 3) Sears 1/2" foam - 2 layers laminated makes 1.0"
Note: I have nothing against Festool foam and look forward to using it when soft foam is what's needed.
This job needed a dense foam.
.
Hours: 6 hours on case

What are you using to make the cut outs in the foam?

Seth

I like the common hobby knife for control and a fresh .20¢ blade.
The upscale straight edge is thick, it keeps your cut vertical and on path.
It's also heavy so it doesn't move around.
.
The cheaper scale has a cork bottom. Kinda achieves the same control.
.
I guess cutting out foam is similar to mounting a door lockset and strike.
When you're done it either looks a Festool owner did the job or your first landlord.
.
For the deeper foam I'm not sure yet.

"Adjustable Storage Containers" Update: aka the plastic trays in SYS-SB Storage Box that they don't give you enough of.
My local Festool dealer called and one size is sitting in Indianapolis and the other size is available just after Christmas and will wait to UPS at the same time.
Shop Gnome is very upset. This chaps his bottom.
Shop Gnome would also like to see a full length tray, 2.5" x 14.0".

Tool:        6” random orbit
History:        use alot
New Case: SYS 2
Mods:      ) custom guts
.
photo 1) disc holder hinges down for transport – required to close the lid.
.
photo 2) disc holder sits upright during work
.
photo 3) installed thick felt in bottom randomly
.
photo 4) disc holder and divider thingys - don't need to carry 100 discs
.
photo 5) the base is Alupanel. Rigid, not flimsy. Land Rover green. It is the sheeting used on the face of Land Rover franchises. I happily took the scraps home. The white parts are PVC.
.
Notes: The sander itself is line-line with the lid.
The handle is screwed into a blind nut, I don’t use it much.

I think you were correct. As far as I can tell white Azek closed cell PVC foam from Home Depot is virtually identical to white Sintra closed cell PVC foam from the sign suppliers. If there are any differences I hope Sign Guy will spell them out for us.

super appreciated Mike.
Yeah Peoria has a home depot and I will look.
Gotta say it aint the mega-sized Depot I was used to in Calumet City, IL.
.
....Back to PVC.
Sintra is a four letter word in this shop.
BIG porosity problems !
When you sand a letter it better not have holes and voids.
On 3/8" and thicker Sintra (trade name) there was voids.
I fought it out with them in their booth at a sign show in Vegas....samples in had!
Got me a credit on my purchase.
photo 1: Sintra .38" cut with the same saw blade as last nights project.
And the Sintra cut was 5 years ago!
As you will quickly figure out there are density differences.
On their thinner stuff the pores were almost non-exist.
.
photo 2: from the project above - NOT sanded ! - just a quality table saw blade and have not changed it in years - the plexiglass was edge dressed on a 12"Ø sander - dirt showing - c'sunk was for #8 not #6 oops
.
photo 3: Samples I can show a customer
.
lastly I am asking myself just what a customer would want PVC sheet for other than a sign substrate?
Why would a home center stock it?
It has no insulating properties.
It is heavy, at least in big sheet form.
The surface scratches easily and would be forever discounted.
It is also pricey.
In the sun it warps easily up to .38"
It is dimensionally stable flat. Unlike wood.

The PVC I have used, I used to make weatherproof trim. Brick stops in particular. I am certain that the "coating" on it is more like plastic than wood. I also have replaced my facia and other "gutter" boards. These will never rot and are far more stable than wood.

I am certain they may be in the same family, but serve much different purposes.

I looked at Lowes tonight.
They sell this brand.
similar but less dense.
nothing like the smell of a sawmill...

Tool:        4.5Ø” Makita Grinder
History:        use frequently
New Case: SYS 2
Mods:      ) all custom
.
photo 1) all finished – the lid closes with minimal interference from the discs – all items snug
.
photo 2) lid foam – used ½ of a Festool OE lid covering just the tool not the discs or it won’t close – used some contact cement –
.
photo 3) installed thick felt in bottom randomly – reduces rattling in my work truck
.
photo 4) disc holder – 3mm alupanel – fake  diamond plate film applied – PVC cut-outs in each cell – v-shaped bottom might have been faster.
.
photo 5) rubber coating for the heck of it.
.
Photo 6) scrap wood used for the holder – some kind of hardwood pulled from a dumpster – good aroma when cutting with grain – burns easy  end grain though – all draft angles 7.5°
.
Photo7) guts all remove, they have too. The grip handle disappears in a garage under the grinder, look for the mouse hole. I don’t use the grip much but it pulls out fast if needed – The lock nut wrench is hiding in the 1/2” of dead space under the plastic cross bar.(part that says wrench), anybody know what function that has? Almost didn't put it back in. Willing to trade mine for adjustable storage containers which we do need. It takes up ½” of precious space that I could use for the electric cord. – grinder holder plate has felt under it.
.
Notes: old case was 1440 in³ - SYS 2 is 1158 in³ -  ஃ overall size reduced
Hours: 16 hours on case
